Welcome to edition 39 of 52 Waldo Jeffers’ Friday Night Warts ‘N’ All Covers.  This week is a stab at Down in the Tube Station at Midnight" , the second single from The Jam’s third album, All Mod Cons. Released in October 1978. 
Bruce Foxton’s bass on the original is amazing and the song was the first signs that Paul Weller was beginning to become the calibre of songwriter that he still is today. 
This version is dedicated to Red Lad who brought us all to our earliest gigs in The Baggot Inn, McGonagles, Top Hat, Olympic Ballroom etc and set us on our way & is a massive Jam fan. Thank you!!
This song is played on a Burns guitar that was bought by a very talented Kells singer/songwriter/producer/multi instrumentalist Chris Carry who I link to below, give him a listen.

The Go-Betweens first 6 albums all had Double Ls in their titles, so following on in the same vein it’s a double Go-Betweens fortnight with an attempt to capture the essence of my favourite song of theirs from 1988’s 16 Lover’s Lane, this is Quiet Heart. 
I had to laugh as the number of listens to last weeks GBs number was 5, by far the lowest and this mirrored their career 🤣

This week it’s “Down The Dip” the final track from Aztec Camera’s debut album “High Land, Hard Rain” released in 1983. 
It’s long been my favourite Roddy Frame song & clocks in at a mere 2 minutes.
Pop Fact: “The Dip” was the nickname for The Diplomat public house in East Kilbride where he grew up.

Roddy is not very active in recent years but has a website & several great albums to his name, hoping he gets back to what he does best soon.

On a diet of steroids & antibiotics for a bronchial infection, Waldo Jeffers is nothing if not a pro, armed with the old show-business Maxim that “The Show Must Go On” he returns for his 50th Friday with a warts n all cover of The The’s 1983 single “This Is The Day” A deceptively simple but brilliant song.
Back in the day Matt Johnson was equally important to our gang as Morrissey & Marr & retrospectively, it is still rightfully so.

Welcome to Waldo Jeffers’ OBU pitched up at Strandhill for the penultimate  warts n all cover which is a take on Bright Eyes’ 2004 single “Lua” which translates as Moonlight in Portuguese.

Waldo Jeffers is nothing if not stubborn & so after a year of Friday Night’s Warts n All Covers, the project comes to an end. 
The closing song is a deconstruction of LCD Soundsystem’s 2007 single “All My Friends” recorded, produced, music played & mastered by xcaliber at his Prenzlauer Berg Studio in East Berlin (Hansa was booked out) 🙏
Maybe the best song that decade, I have great memories of them headlining Electric Picnic and thousands of objects suspended in the strobe lit air of this song as they got louder & faster with our heartbeats - magical moment ❤️
