Army Band

This is the first part of the series of Citizen FM's 10 News stories recorded in 1997. I stumbled on the single cassette recently and I thought it would be good to share the content and our style of reportage so that those of you who've never known about that great radio could now get some some impression of the kind of journalism practiced at the station.

Citizen FM, the true voice of the people was the first private radio station in the Gambia to start broadcasting undiluted, unbiased news to the people in both official and local languages. The station was eventually closed down by authorities who became deeply uncomfortable with its growing popularity. 

This first part contains stories of an armed attacked on Kartong military post plus a package on the controversies regarding a civilian government celebrating a military coup of July 22nd 1994.

Some factual errors to note though: In one of my stories I mistakenly referred to Lt Alieu Bah as Lamin Bah. Just realised that now. But since this programme was recorded in 1997, nothing could be done about to it or alter it.
