Championed by Chamber Music Magazine as “Saxophone Ambassadors”, the Mana Quartet has, since its inception in 2007, presented fresh interpretations of 21st-century repertoire and many virtually unheard of 20th-century masterworks. Using vintage instruments built to the specifications of the saxophone’s inventor, Adolphe Sax, Mana’s passionate presentations offer audiences a chance to view the saxophone in a new light – a striking aesthetic characterized by intrinsic warmth, dynamic range of character, and absolute versatility. Mana redefines the saxophone quartet and the saxophone’s place in classical music.

In 2009, the group became the first saxophone quartet in history to receive the coveted Grand Prize at the Coleman International Chamber Ensemble Competition, quickly elevating them to the professional chamber music arena. Since then, the group has taken on a growing list of residencies at major music festivals and universities, as well as countless community outreach concerts and events throughout the United States and Europe. Mana is repeatedly featured on NPR’s Performance Today, with orchestras across North America in featured concerto appearances, and maintains a high profile on the chamber circuit.

Mana is currently the Resident Chamber Ensemble at the National Music Festival, where they recently performed Philip Glass’s Concerto for Saxophone Quartet with the festival orchestra and hosted their 5th annual Mana Saxophone Institute, an internationally attended two-week intensive apprenticeship program. In 2011, Mana was invited to join the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival, as the Young Professionals in Residence. From 2009-2011 Mana served as the Artistic Ensemble in Residence at the Hot Springs Music Festival, where they gave the United States Premiere of Swedish composer Anders Nilsson’s Concerto Grosso for Saxophone Quartet and Orchestra, in 2010

I'm a composer from Germany, born in 1967, who wrote his first compositions at the Age of 12. I studied music at "Robert-Schumann Musikhochschule" in Düsseldorf and graduated as a concert pianist. All in all my way as an artist was not straight an so I'm happy to present some of my works here on soundcloud.

Founded in 2016, the Megalopolis Saxophone Orchestra (MSO) brings together artists of “exceptional musicianship” (Boston Musical Intelligencer) to cultivate and disseminate a nuanced view of the saxophone family. It is the collective’s mission to educate audiences about the saxophone through new as well as neglected repertoire that demands a quality of playing inimitable by other instruments.

For their 2019-20 season, the Megalopolis Saxophone Orchestra will present four concerts at venues including All Saints’ Church (Princeton, NJ) and the DiMenna Center for Classical Music (NY, NY). Their first two concerts of the season featured the world premiere of a new work by Molly Herron, as well as a collaboration with mezzo-soprano Briana Hunter. For the Spring, the ensemble will present two premieres, including a new work by the winner of the MSO’s second Call for Scores. These concerts will additionally feature winning works from the MSO’s Call for Scores, highlighting emerging composers across the globe.

Saxophonist and conductor Andrew R. Steinberg has been recognized for his “beautiful tone” (composer Hans Kox) and his “astute and refined leadership” (Boston Musical Intelligencer) throughout North America, Asia, and Europe. As an Alice M. Ditson Fund and Aaron Copland Fund for Music grantee, Steinberg has commissioned over a dozen works for saxophone and has premiered countless more for the instrument. Recent performances featured new compositions by Nicola LeFanu, Hayes Biggs, and Niki Harlafti, as well as premieres of works by Tera de Marez Oyens, Eric Moe, and Lei Liang. In addition, he has performed at music festivals across the globe, including the Summer Institute for Contemporary Performance Practice, Round Top Festival Institute, Spoleto Festival USA, and the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival.

Since receiving his doctorate from New England Conservatory, Steinberg has presented lectures and master classes at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Georgia State University, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Boston University, the International Conference on Saxophone Pedagogy and Performance, the North American Saxophone Alliance’s 2020 Biennial Conference, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Recent topics have included The Life of Adolphe Sax, The Saxophone in the Weimar Republic, and The Raschèrian Approach.

Andrew R. Steinberg serves as faculty at Palomar College, Coronado School of the Arts, and Usdan Summer Camp for the Arts and is the Music Director of the Megalopolis Saxophone Orchestra.
