From a scrappy kid with a notebook and a dream to young man fighting to find his place, Leon Legacys Knack for creativity and out of the box thinking are both a gift and a curse. Cody Beebe and Blake Noble have been no secret to the Pacific Northwest music scene. Beebe, a Washington State resident and front man of Cody Beebe & the Crooks, has toured extensively, nationally and internationally, developing a die-hard following of their Northwest rock influenced, Americana sound. Australian born Noble was an instrumental breath of fresh air when he arrived in Seattle in 2012. Also an accomplished touring musician, his distinctive percussive guitar and skilled didgeridoo blended with American folk, blues and funk caught the attention of waves of new fans, as well as Cody Beebe.

When the two were billed to play Chinook Music Festival in 2013, with both their independent projects in full swing (Noble slated to tour France in 2014 and Beebe developing plans to tour Europe in early 2015), they began toying with the idea of writing together. What began as a simple collaboration, based on the mutual respect between Beebe and Noble for each other’s unique talents, gave way to Rust on the Rails. A full band whose music is based on the common thread of the Roots-Rock sound which ran through both their independent careers.

The debut EP from Rust on the Rails, November Sky, released in October 2014 showcased the soulful, Americana Rock vocals of Beebe and the unrivaled, intricate percussive guitar and didgeridoo of Noble, punctuated by an exceptional rhythm section and the violin virtuosity of Tim Snider. Brandon Taylor of Seattle Music Insider said of their sound, “something new made familiar; something complicated made simple – their sound blending world music [and] 90s rock behind complexions of blues, folk [and] funk. The result is uniquely intuitive.” Their approachable complexity took flight and the (super)-group has found themselves sharing the stage with Sturgill Simpson and Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real as well as billing alongside Mumford & Sons, Dawes and Foo Fighters at Gentlemen of the Road (Walla Walla). The collaboration has proved worthy of attention and leaves one hopefully anticipating what will come next from Rust on the Rails.

Melanie Martinez's creative drive and talents have always distinguished her from other musicians. After releasing her platinum-certified 2015 debut album, Cry Baby—which reached No. 1 on Billboard's alternative albums chart and has amassed over two billion streams worldwide —she conceived and directed a video for each song on the album. These mini-movies traced the traumas and insecurities experienced by the album's character, Cry Baby.
 
Melanie’s sophomore album and film, K-12, is another ambitious triumph. K-12's music is a vibrant and singular melting pot of low-key hip-hop, soulful pop and indie-leaning electro. K-12's universe is an expansion of the one introduced in Cry Baby. Using lyrics rich with metaphor, songs address the struggle to find a place to belong—including within friendships, the physical world and romantically—even when fitting into society feels like an uphill battle.
 
To accompany the album, Martinez wrote and directed a 90-minute movie (also called K-12) that incorporates the album's music and mirrors the themes and characters introduced. Filmed on location in Budapest, Hungary, the movie focuses on Cry Baby (portrayed by Martinez) and a class of students who find themselves trapped in a horror house-like residential school. As they experience the usual grade school rites of passage—a lunch room food fight, the embarrassment of gym class, a romance with nefarious intentions, courses taught by checked-out teachers— they have to figure out a way to escape.
