What´s a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon? One option is to drive out of town to the beach and hang out with your friends. Crank up the volume of your car stereo and enjoy your own music selection while sipping beers and puffing joints.

Now imagine this scenario in a sub-saharan African metropolis of today. Add a bit of a traffic jam before you reach the beach, think of car stereos that blast out selections of Afro House, Kuduro, Kizomba and African Rap. And soon you are close to the vibe that Daniel Haaksman´s new single "Sabado" is all about. It´s a lazy, laid back uptempo track that puts the listener to an imaginary car park party on an African city beach front. It features the mighty guitar licks of Colombia´s Bulldozer, but has an allover South-African feel to it. Yes, Paul Simon´s "Graceland" is an influence here, but also all the hot new house track that comes out of South Africa and the Portuguese speaking African countries such as Angola and Moçambique. Thus the tune is called "Sabado", Portuguese for "Saturday".

Daniel Haaksman´s "Sabado" tune ft. Bulldozer has turned a lot of heads on dancefloors around the world since its release earlier this year with its perfect blending of afro vibes, champeta licks and tropical beats. Now the big tune gets a high quality four-pack remix treatment. In classic Man Recordings fashion, the remix EP comes with four differently tempo and style versions from around the world.

Londons garage bass dons LV, of which Daniel has been a long time fan, deliver an high powered island version of "Sabado" that will rock any party carnival style. South African hot ticket of the moment, Aero Manyelo, twisted "Sabado" into a township style house tune. Remix number three comes from Boogaloo, a long time insider´s tip from Lisbon. For their version, they removed "Sabado"´s original melody and remade it in tropical house fashion. The EP gets perfectly rounded up by the dembow inspired version of UK´s Castro who lately rose to prominence in the global bass scene with his releases on Enchufada records.

The edit appeards on the B-side on the up-coming Shango 12" release, featuring our  bass-heavy, dancefloor-minded remix from me and DJ Beware of the 1978 Lord Nelson track, Shango, which sits on the A-side.

Robert ‘Lord’ Nelson, now in his 80s, is one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most popular artists with a string of hit records from the 1950s all the way through to the 80s and 90s. After leaving Trinidad for the USA in the early 50’s Nelson soon became a much-loved calypsonian with the expatriate community in the New York area and beyond, as well as back home in the Caribbean, with his unique style of mixing calypso and later soca with soul, funk disco and boogie.

Taken from the 1978 Charlies LP ‘Black Gold’, ‘Shango’ was produced by Clive Bradley – one of Trinidad’s top producers in the 1970s. With ‘Shango’ Nelson follows a tradition of calypso and soca tracks that focus on the shango cults of Trinidad and Tobago that have their roots in the religion of the Yoruba people of Nigeria. With it’s driving 4/4 beat, traditional instrumentation and choral chants it was a step away from his trademark poppy and soul-flavoured soca-funk sound of the late 70s.
