Across his 20 albums, Smith’s songwriting has addressed universal themes—love, mortality, and spirituality—alongside contemporary issues including immigration, addiction, and narcissism. Critics have long praised Smith’s work. Bill Golembeski of Folking.com calls him “a well-kept secret… churning out music with street cred to burn,” while Jodi Marxbury describes his sound as “smart indie rock with a dirty country soul.” Colin Jordan notes Smith’s blend of “blues with jazz, classic rock overdrive, and a trademark smoky vocal.”

For more than three decades as a songwriter, producer, and mentor, Smith has been guided by a single, enduring mission: to bring people together through music. That commitment is at the heart of his work as Executive Director of Six String Ranch, the Austin-based residential studio and school he co-founded with Bill Kaman, where he has mentored hundreds of singer-songwriters and instrumentalists from around the world. “I’ve been a lifelong, self-employed professional musician—I’ve never had a job that wasn’t directly connected to music,” Smith says. “I’m grateful to share that love of music with others and have fun doing it.”
