In her loyalty, Sassi runs towards Punnhun's kingdom barefooted

Midway in the dessert, she is thirsty, she imagines her Punnhun alongside her.

Meanwhile Punnhun awakes and realizes the evil plot of his brothers. He runs towards Sassi's home.

In their desperation, both call out each other's names

To his horror, in a flash of lightening Punnhun sees his Sassi lying dead in the mountain valley

Driven crazy by such a sight, Punnhun is lost

Punnhun jumps in the same ditch as he embraces his own death.

A work for piano and orchestra I composed back in 2009. It is scored for piano, woodwind in 2s, 4 Horns, 2 Trumpets, 3 Trombones, Tuba, Timpani, Cymbals, Triangle, Bass Drum and Strings.

Celestial Elixir

This is my Symphonic Poem, based on the legend of Sassi Punnuh - a Sindhi folk tale in the country of Pakistan. 
                                                     
The Legend 

A princess is born to the Raja of Bhambore whom the astrologers predict to be a curse on the royal family. With a heavy heart the Raja orders to put her in the wooden box to be thrown in the river Indus. The box reaches a poor fisherman, who rears the child as his own. In time, the girl Sassi grows to be as beautiful as a fairy that the news of her beauty reaches far and wide.

When the news reaches the Prince Punnhun of Balochistan, he becomes desperate to see her and thus begins his march to Bhambore. When Punnhun arrives, he is enchanted by Sassi’s beauty and they both fall in love. However, Sassi’s father has doubts about the match, but after persuasion from Punnhun the father agrees on a condition; Punnhun has to prove himself to be a master fisherman. Punnhun agrees, but having never done such a thing, he struggles in dismay day and night but fails to do so. In his love for Sassi, he desperately pays local fishermen in gold and therefore presents Sassi’s father with large amount of fish. The father finally agrees. 

Meanwhile, as Punnhun’s brothers learn of the ill-matched marriage, they become furious and travel to Bhambore. First they threaten Punnhun, but after his consistent relenting, they agree to it, which shocks Punnhun as he least expected that. So, the night before the marriage, his brothers devise a malicious plot. On the day of wedding, there are celebrations and everyone is happy for Sassi and Punnhun. As the celebration end on the first night, the brothers put their scheming to work as they force Punnhun to drink different types of wines. As he is fully intoxicated, the brothers take him on the camel back to their kingdom in Balochistan.

Next day when Sassi wakes up, she realizes she has been cheated. She grieves over the loss of her husband and desperately runs towards his kingdom barefooted. Her loyalty and faith in her Punnhun prove so heavy in her heart that she starts imagining him alongside her. At around the same time, Punnhun wakes up and realizes the plot of his brothers, he runs back to Bhambore. On the fateful night, the storm breaks out and Punnhun calls out Sassi’s name but upon a burst of lightening, sees that Sassi is lying dead between a mountain valley. He is overcome with grief and jumps to his death too. 

The legendary grave still exists in this valley.

The Symphonic Poem is scored for a large orchestra: 2 Piccolos, 2 Flutes, 3 Oboes, Cor Anglais, 3 Clarinets in B-flat, Bass Clarinet, 3 Bassoons, Double Bassoons, 6 Horns in F, 4 Trumpets in C, 3 Trombones, 2 Tubas, 2 sets of Timpanis, Cymbals, Triangle, Bass Drum and Strings.
