Germany is not known for soul music, but some of the hottest disco artists of the 1970ies and 80ies were based in Germany. To be more precise, in Munich. Donna Summer, Moroder, Faltermeyer, Boney M or Silver Convention who created the „string disco sound“ came from Munich’s wild disco scene in the 1970ies. And that's the vibe you get with the new GOME guys. The 25 years old guys originally come from Munich. They have the Munich disco DNA. Which means: They feel the funk, they know about Soul music and good bass lines, they know how to groove (not to bang) and they have that slight sense of irony and easiness you need to make good disco music. (Some say the dark days of Berlin techno are over after Covid, Munich disco is the opposite.)

GOME are a live act. Their disco is played on several drum machines, keyboards, sequencers and microphone. (Check their live on Insta). Their first EP got massive props from the likes of Laurent Garnier („Love love love for this EP“) and other more funk oriented house DJs.

The new one goes further. It's 80ies disco. The first track „Teach you“ was produced in the raw style of early Prince or the legendary Sexual Harrassment. A pumping bass line, driving 808 beats and funky rap vocals is the only thing you need. Erobique, King of German disco and member of the band International Pony (DJ Koze & Cosmic DJ) did a stripped down remix showing that less is more.

ABOUT THE EP:

" Zama " means sunrise in ancient mayan language and it's the original name of Tulum for being one of the places where you can first see the sunrise in this region of Mexico. A privileged port trade community used to live here long time ago, related with magical-religious rituals, arts and astronomic observation, specially Venus, representative star of Kukulkán (mayan feathered serpent god).

" Pakal " is the name of the ancient mayan ruler who led a period of peace and prosperity in his territory for decades. The mayan people understood him as a representative of the divine in the terrenal world. Some theories say that Pakal had the knowledge to travel to outer space and also through time.

" Bakhalal " is the original mayan name of Bacalar, the stunning 7 colors lagoon in Mexico. Given to its privileged position, Bakhalal becomes an important trade point on the route that stretched as far as Honduras, frequented by pirates, privateers and buccaneers.

Zama EP is my personal gratitude to the whole mayan culture and all the magical moments this place, wich i could call my second home, gived to me; forever thankful.

The semantics of the primary track released by the Black Sea Side label proves to be a collective image — a palette of opinions and values. The people familiar with the aspects of auditory perception consider the language of sounds to be extensive and ambiguous.

What is music? It is a matter which is not in itself the meaning of life but provides an opportunity to find it. A craft that takes a lot of time and effort but pays back a hundred times more. An indispensable assistant in cognitive rethinking and expressing emotions. A belief that protects against fears and promotes the acquisition of new communication channels. Perhaps it is a gift that effortlessly gets rid of the framework of firm definitions and allows you to comprehend the variability of what is happening. In the end, an idea that can cause alienation along with pure passion.

Emphasizing an important speech, the minimal-groove aesthete does not only dress the thought forms in highlighted elements but generates a conceptual panorama. A veil of distortion and compressor is thrown over the kick, creating a "dirty" shade, while the cyclic pads, together with the sub-bass and dubby stabs, set a rich dance harmony.

The latest instalment in Eddie Merced’s masterclass of deep techno meditation arrives in the form of 'Like A Flower In The Rain,' a three-track demonstration of his keen instinct for the most soul-stirring strains of machine music. 

The fundamental groove of ‘I’ll Wait For You’ feels like a serene, heads down roller after the high-drama of the lead track, but as ever there’s space for the story to unfold as upper-register strings add the peaks to this steady-trucking, mid tempo workout. 

In an era of chaotic eclecticism, Merced’s focus on a sound feels refreshing, each new release edging his concept further out, inspiration undiluted, craft perfected.

The project “Baier/Box” consists of Dominick Baier and Bao-Nghi Droste. In 2001, the two longterm friends joined efforts to realize a shared vision of modern “4-to-the-floor” dance music. The defining characteristic of their sound stems from a completely digital production technique - programs like Reaktor, Absynth (Native Instruments) and Live (Ableton) contribute to a clean, crisp and very detailed aesthetic. Besides their collaborative output, both artists are accomplished solo producers.

Bao-Nghi Droste, a design student based in Heidelberg and Darmstadt, has released as Boxtype on Shitkatapult (among others) and recently as Microbox on Andy Vaz’s Background Records. Dominick Baier can look back on a string of releases as Dolby Absurd on TV-Whatever,a label he co-founded in 1997. After their critically high acclaimed Turm3Disko EP on textone.org its about time for Baier/Box to release on Thinner, not only because the hometown (Mannheim) is the same but also for the fact that the weekly club die_lounge, co-managed by Domnick Baier, helped Thinner to do a couple of showcases. On Boxing/Unboxing we have four original tracks by Baier/Box that are remixed by reknown artists.

The lush opener track Atmung fiddles with dusty particles of microfunk until an organic pad draws through the playground. This track is slowed down by Thinners finest Digitalverein, who puts his unique dubchords and cyclings over the grained funk of the original to give it the original Digitalverein flavour. The second track Binary is a weirdo microgroover at its best with cut voices and inprovised flute interludes over crunched beats. In the end its perfect remix material for Frank Martiniq, the king of boxed microgrooves, who gave the track a more driving approach opposed to the granularism of the original. Track No.3 is Lushbits concerns a rather easy swinging classic minimal house track with easy access. Baier/Box thoughtfully gave the files to the Dubhouse legend from Frankfurt that is C*Rock, who runs his own imprints Stir15 and LoFi Stereo. Finally we have the wonderful Duck.Dub, a minimal Reaktorhouse cut that has been originally released on the third lounge Compilation called _lounge.essenzen Vol.3. Since we saw the emotional potential in this track we couldnt think of anybody else than Taho to reinterpret this song, though we didnt expect such a spacehouse blissed-out harmonic Trance anthem that astonished us completly!
