A long and hot summer day is surrendering itself to a calm and peaceful rain cloud.
This recording was made in a terrain located 20 km away from the Sea of Marmara.

The sound of the Song Thrush that I recorded in Kazdağları (Mount Ida, Turkey), which I visit every spring, just before sunset.
Kazdağları is the forest where I was born, raised, and always listened to attentively. In this recording, I am approximately 3 meters away from the Song Thrush and I feel very lucky that I was able to capture its entire performance without frightening it.
There was a distant, tranquil sound of a stream in the background. The species of birds heard in the distance are: Brown Thrasher, Northern Cardinal, Eurasian Blackbird.

The temperature is 1 degree Celsius.

All the garbage brought by the north wind has washed up on the shore.

The seas regurgitate all the filth.

At an average altitude of 600 meters, in a cold autumn, among the yellowed leaves, the wind is shedding leaves and sometimes breaking branches. Recorded near a small village called Hodul.

25 May, 2024, Summit of Kazdağları, 1770 meters. 

On a windy day when the clouds embraced me, recording this sound at the summit of Kazdağları is personally very significant to me. It is a mountain that offers me different gifts each time I visit. A mountain that allows me to pause and reflect on my existence, one that matures me. 

I think it's a mountain I will never tire of visiting for the rest of my life.

I greet the dawn beside a gently flowing stream, 100 meters ahead of my camp. As it is late spring, the tranquility of the birds is intersected by the mating season of the frogs.

One late afternoon in late May, I sat under an olive tree in the olive grove and made this recording. Listening to the wind rustling the olive leaves and branches reminded me of how much I love and respect this tree. Some call it the Tree of Immortality, others call it the Tree of Peace, some even call it the tree that illuminates the darkness. How impressive it is for a tree to inspire, bring peace, heal, and illuminate.

What keeps you awake at night? Money worries? Your conscience? Traffic? Dogs barking? Or the shrill sound of a stressed robin forced to sing at night to find a mate?

This composed feature for BBC Radio 4 by Nina Perry explores the problem of sleeplessness and the crucial relationship between sound and sleep, all set within a soundscape of noises heard during a sleepless night interwoven with specially composed music.

Tinnitus sufferer Helen takes us on a journey through a sleepless night of thought and sounds of ticking clocks, snoring, a restless child, mysterious footsteps and a neighbour's late night party. How are these sounds perceived in a state of sleeplessness? How do we respond to sound emotionally, physiologically and hormonally. Are the sounds of the night changing? Are silent nights a thing of the past?

Answering these questions and elucidating the relationship between sound and sleep are: Professor of Acoustics and Dynamics Andy Moorhouse and Senior Lecturer in Acoustics Bill Davies, from Salford University; David Baguley, Head of Audiology at Cambridge University Hospitals, who discusses sound perception, the meaning of sound and the reaction to sound as elements within Tinnitus treatment; Dr Ken Hume, a sleep researcher specializing in sound and sleep, discussing the physiology and psychology of sleep and sound disturbance; and Rupert Marshall, Lecturer in Animal Behaviour at Aberystwyth University, describing how urban wildlife is changing its behaviour to cope with modern life (for example, robins nesting in urban areas who struggle to be heard during the day are more likely to sing at night than their country cousins).
