After 7 years in Leipzig, Vanaenae has recently moved to Berlin. Nevertheless, she is very much connected to the Leipzig scene and its people. As a member of Music Of Color, she works to increase the visibility of BIPoC in the electronic music scene.
Her interest in different styles of music can be heard in her monthly residency as part of the Sunday Groove programme on Radio Blau, an ever-changing mix of ambient, electro and house.
Her music features mostly house records, always some 90s classics and fresh releases which let you dance.

INTERVIEW
• How did you get into DJing
As a teenager I was compulsively recording/collecting music. Started Djing thanks to a good
friend of mine who taught me the basics and who sweetly gave me his old console. I will never
forget that! Funny thing: it was an Hercules RMX, they don't produce them anymore!

• Where do you get inspirations?
I love musical genealogy, I usually do my own research on how certain genres/songs originated:
they are all the result of social and cultural backgrounds unique in time and space.
The same goes for artists that I follow. Always try to get an impression of their influences: it
makes them who they are and the music they create.
At the very end, it all comes down to how I feel. If I can let myself go, and the music moves my
body then I know it! ...sometimes I just need the first 10 seconds, sometimes longer ;)

• Where do you prefer to DJ or to make music in general?
For myself in my room, because is therapeutic for me. In small private parties with and for friends, because I like to have an intimate sensation of joy and appreciation about music. Lastly, in Clubs/Festivals conceptualized with awareness and clear political positioning against racism, sexism and queerphobia. Where safety standards are the norm and not the exception.

• Did you have any specific thoughts about your podcast?
Not really... I just hope listeners enjoy as much as I did while curating the Set.
This one was very much inspired by “The blessed Madonna” she’s an American Dj/producer.
Love her music!

• What would you like to change in the music scene if you could?
Above all, I think we need people in certain positions who can think and act critically in a queerfeminist intersectional way. The probability of something going wrong is already lower if there
we have more diverse and inclusive teams working in Club/Festivals/Cultural institutions. I think it helps to keep thinking about what your value system (set of beliefs and attitudes) is, as a
person, but also in terms of your own work, if you are a club owner for example. What kind of
club do we want to be and for whom? How can we make it long lasting? How can the dancefloor, the space, be used to educate people? Can you show documentaries about music history? Can you promote and maintain your value system in all your events?

• What was your first record?
My first CD was "Up & Down - The party Album!" from Vengaboys. I was 14.

• What memories do you have of your music lessons? Would your teachers consider you in the music/ club industry today?
Unfortunately never had formal music education. But where I come from (Venezuela) you are from a very early age exposed to music everywhere. It's part of your everyday. You assimilate it, you dance it, you live through it.

• What do you wish for in the future from your audience, the club culture?
I wish my audiences advancing gender equality, joining and creating safe spaces for learning,
community and progression.

Originally from Venezuela, Yo Lee is currently based in Germany.
Her passion for music started at a young age, compulsively recording and collecting tracks. In 2016, a good friend introduced Yo Lee to the basics of DJing, and the journey began. Starting with a now-rare Hercules RMX, her dedication to the craft grew stronger.

Yo Lee's musical palette draws influences from House, Techno, Bassline, and Afro-Latin beats. Through vibrant and melodic mixes, she fuses together various rhythms, creating a celebration of music.

This mix is inspired by drum and percussion-driven pieces of UK Funky, Baile Funk, and electro House. She hopes listeners will enjoy the mix as much as they did while curating it.

Here is what @yo-lee-sound wants to share with you through this mix: With this mix, I wanted to showcase a very important side of my repertoire. Stuff I listen to in my spare time and enjoy playing, alongside garage and UKFunky.
 
I started off with energetic sounds drawing on a diverse range of influences, from techno and house to the many styles of Latin percussion and then transitioned into the heavier and bassy rhythms of "Funk carioca", a hip hop-influenced style from Rio de Janeiro, that has become increasingly popular among working classes in Brazil. #Über das Set: Mit diesem Mix wollte ich eine sehr wichtige Seite meines Repertoires präsentieren. Hip-House war meine Inspiration für dieses Stück. Diese Form der House-Musik entstand Mitte bis Ende der 1980er Jahre. Frühe Künstler des Genres wie The Beatmasters, Tyree und
Fast Eddie haben neben vielen anderen den frühen House-Sound seiner Zeit (einschließlich Chicago House der späten 1980er Jahre und Acid House) mit Elementen aus dem Hip Hop und mit fröhlichem, triumphalem Rap verschmolzen. Hip House entwickelte sich bis heute als eine Fusion von House und Hip Hop, die die Breakbeats, Drum-Loops und Turntables der frühen Hip-Hop-Produktion mit den Four-on-the-Floor-Rhythmen und gefühlvollen Elementen des House der späten 1980er Jahre gemischt haben.

Music is freedom. It has the ability to capture the essence of our emotions and experiences, is an act of sharing and invitation to vibe with it.
Music is transformative, healing, and highly vibrational depending on the music you listen to. It can paint a picture in one’s mind or be an escape or create a bridge.
