A Touch of Blue

It begins in a hush—hi-hats fluttering like breath, panning left to right, a sine wave murmuring beneath, and low sub-bass like the ground itself humming. Slowly, a chord in E minor stretches wide, holding space for blues guitar riffs to emerge—gritty, bright, unpolished. A woman’s voice joins in scat, answering and teasing the guitar, their voices winding around each other in a playful, smoky dance. The current shifts: a sequencer takes hold, steady and hypnotic, while a saxophone pours out phrases like thoughts half-formed. As the piece draws to a close, the scat returns—solo now—fleeting, alive, ending on a final jazz phrase. The first sounds reappear, softer this time, and drift quietly into silence.

I'll cut through the nonsense and offer a 3-minute song, canonical pop, based on an ancient formula from the birth of the genre. I'm deluding myself that it's in the vein of, say, Nick Lowe. I hope so.

It initially appeared on Cooke's album Ain't That Good News, released mid-February 1964 by RCA Victor; a slightly edited version of the recording was released as a single on December 22, 1964. Produced by Hugo & Luigi and arranged and conducted by René Hall, the song was the B-side to "Shake".

The song was inspired by various events in Cooke's life, most prominently when he and his entourage were turned away from a whites-only motel in Louisiana. Back to the present 😊... This is a quicky born from some serious emotion re connecting to my first band. The power of nostalgia is something else. The power of nostalgia wrapped in music for me is one of the most giant forces in the universe. We gotta use it to teach in my pea head opinion. How music helps us wire our brains is just different to everything else and I strongly believe the only reason it's not in schools yet more deeply is because we just haven't done that yet... Let's make it so! It literally can be a time machine for knowledge if we design it to be that!
