This 4th release on #FEELINGS by label boss Ben Aqua is a maniacally playful, yet ecstatically dark and cybernetic nod to Detroit & Chicago-style techno and ghetto-tech. Aqua’s raw, pitched down vocal hook initiates a frantic call-and-response mind game against crunchy, minimal acid synths and distorted 808s that evoke the spirits of club legends DJ Godfather, DJ Assault, and DJ Rashad.

In 2010, Ben Aqua informally self-released a primitive version of “Don’t Play Dumb” via Bandcamp. The track gathered support from club music innovators such as Girl Unit, and was featured on the Goon Club Allstars’ “Layers” mix for DIS Magazine in 2014. A year later, Ben realized the irony of how human creatures like to “play dumb”, regardless of how “smart” their technology is. These #feelings spawned his decision to re-edit and polish up “Don’t Play Dumb” for a fresh 2015 release.

“Don’t Play Dumb” arrives about one year after Ben Aqua’s notoriously controversial Resident Advisor RA.434 podcast of 2014, which sparked an intense critical discourse on the state of internet-inspired club and electronic music, aka the “online underground”. A few months after the RA podcast drama cloud cleared up (somewhat), Ben performed alongside SOPHIE and A. G. Cook of PC Music - two prominent co-conspirators of the “online underground” - at the official Resident Advisor SXSW 2015 Showcase. More recently, Ben’s work has been featured in FACT Magazine, The FADER, VICE Thump, and Nest HQ.

These are club tracks for the DJ looking to add a modern take on classic acid house to their arsenal.

Jaime Read and Felix Dickinson's pedigree as DJs and producers runs parallel to the history of UK house music. 

In 1991 Jaime Read was lent a couple digital synths and made a few tunes (one of which Richie Hawtin wanted to release). He next hired some studio time and made a number of tunes there, some of which would later appear on Target, Basement 282, Relief and Peace Frog records under Joe Lewis's name (the story behind this is well documented already). Soon after, he spent a lot of time partying in Brighton, where he met Felix Dickinson. Felix turned him on to a hell of a lot of music; and they started djing together at The Joint where they held a residency for 5 years with Bobby Coulman from Soft Rocks.  Jaime has since released records on his own label Push 2 Shove, Ugly Music, and more recently Housewax and Electrosouls. 

Felix’s Dickinson’s history started in the UK free party scene but has since taken him round the world many times over with a 10 year residency at the Lifeforce parties in Japan and repeat performances at festivals from Croatia to Nevada. Felix was making and playing music in those “warehouse days”, but he still consistently champions underground music to this very day, through his myriad musical guises including Foolish and Sly, LHAS Inc, Das Etwas, Bastedos, and Dedication, on labels like DFA, Eskimo, Rush Hour, International Feel and Futurboogie or his own label, Cynic Music.

One of Jaime's early aliases on his label Push 2 Shove was  L.H.A.S. (Larry Heard Appreciation Society), so when the two began making music together (as a fellow admirer of Larry's work) Felix suggested the Society expand and they change the name to L.H.A.S. Inc. to give a further nod to the work of Fingers Inc. (and to differentiate it from the solo work Jaime had done previously). It all got a bit confusing when Jaime revived LHAS a few years ago as to who was responsible for which tracks, so they've now gone back to just using their own names.

Over the last 5 years, High Contrast has come to symbolize the second coming of the trance label.  Rising from the ashes of the ID&T imprint, from their day-one they heeded the scene’s call for a style overhaul and orchestrated a new, future-proofed sound-shock. With a committed group of producers ready to proliferate it, and one colossal track to announce their arrival, they set light to 2005’s dancefloors. 

Now its five years later and they’re on the verge of their century… High Contrast has reached their 100th release.
Inside that relatively short time span the label has carved out its own lean, toughened & unique sound-design. Calling on the electronic dance artists that proved themselves during the ID&T years, their core production contingent were given the artistic freedom to go away and find their own new musical space. Individually they returned with one club hit release after another - all boasting the highest levels of imagination and creativity. 

In their first 5 years High Contrast have masterminded Rank 1’s evolution from ’euphoric trance act’ to widescreen nu-trance anthem creators and oversaw Nic Chagall’s move out from under the Cosmic Gate umbrella to that of standalone headlining artist. They’ve also scored a renaissance return from Wippenberg, helped Marcel Woods don his King of Dark Trance crown & seen Jochen Miller become the poster boy for techno-infected-trance (or perhaps that’s trance-infected-techno?!).  And that in a nutshell is where High Contrast found their exclusive niche. The label is embraced by forward-thinking trance and progressive DJs, but their tracks have also jumped those demarcation lines and been picked up on by spinners like Prydz, Ingrosso, Tong and others (something very few others can claim). 

To bring this phase of the label’s history to a suitably large climax, not one, not two, but three of their acts/artists have collaborated together for the first time on a track entitled (what else but)… ‘100’. 
Nic Chagall, Rank 1 & Wippenberg have pooled all their production-power to fashion a track worthy of commemorating the hundredth release on the broad-vision label. It’s the first time these three heavyweights have teamed up and therefore nothing but a unique collaboration. Rank 1’s big room signature, Nic Chagall progressive trance trademark and Wippenberg’s progressive beats combined in one track worthy to represent this landmark. 
‘100’ will be out on the 14th of June on digital format on all download stores. A special limited edition gold vinyl will be available from June 21st.
