PIE JESU In memoriam Laura Searle 

Hofmeyr wrote this setting of the words “Dear Lord Jesus, grant them rest”  from the Requiem mass on the day his beloved piano teacher and mentor, Laura Searle, passed away. It was first performed at her funeral.

KOAN for orchestra, SATB choir & SATB soloists, was commissioned by the Ludwigsburg International Music Festival 2010. The concept of the work was to fit in between the fragmented version of Mozart's Requiem, as the composer left it, and the Ave verum Corpus. The work explores a transitional twilight zone between life and death. The poems used for the setting are by Rose Ausländer and Anneliese Vitense. The atmosphere evoked by Matthew Arnold in the opening lines of his magnificent 'Dover Beach', an atmosphere of moonlight on a calm sea, and of the sad and distant roar of waves on a pebbled strand, is suggested in the instrumental introduction by motifs that will play an important role in the rest of the setting. The introduction also features a lyrical idea, associated with the bygone age of faith; this theme is recalled in the second stanza, but fades into the reprise of the opening motifs that heralds the melancholy conclusion of the poem.

        The sea is calm tonight. 
	The tide is full, the moon lies far 
	Upon the straits; - on the French coast the light 
	Gleams and is gone; the cliffs of England stand, 
	Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay. 
	Come to the window, sweet is the night-air!
	Only, from the long line of spray 
	Where the sea meets the moon-blanch'd land,
