Van Michael Sets

This mix reflects my own journey in life; From the mind’s turbulent depths we rise upward. Inspired by music, we find our breath and the sounds around us, who’s lessons guide us like friends along our winding way. Good Drums brings together my love of life and the music which means the most to me, especially deep drums and groovy bass, in hopes to share a bit of fun with you! 

In the nature of things, love is never lost. It is in this fashion I gifted this mix on a usb mixtape, as my way of expressing radical self love!

February Is For Lovers

This is one of those sets that built up inside me, patiently awaiting its perfect moment. I found a few of these tracks some years ago and was struck by their unique flavor. Slowly but surely I built up my collection of what I would call the "indie-dance / nu-disco" sound. There is plenty of music under the blanket of those genres but much less of it out there that speaks to my personal tastes. I kept my ears open and picked them up one by one. This isn't a style that I will play often, but damn did it feel right on this beautiful sunrise morning in the desert. Smiling faces and dancing bodies radiated love and light, the speaker stacks roared and my heart was full. I hope you enjoy this set at full volume and dance yourself unabashedly into your happy place :)

Sunrise at Moontribe 29 Year Anniversary, Indie-Dance & Nu-Disco

The view of the moonrise from a beautiful living desert is a sight not so easily forgotten. In celebration of how fortunate we are to witness this beautiful dance of the Sun and Moon, I put together this funky and sacred soundscape to remember it by. It's moments like these that cast light deep into our souls, and build a foundation of joy and gratitude for a lifetime.

After 2AM in a San Francisco club with a warehouse feel, this Dulce Vita DJ set comes from an energetic performance on two decks and a mixer, immediately following DJ Dan and Lee Coombs.

Prepare for an in-your-face blend of super intelligent psy-breaks, tech funk, and electro groove - a ride that will take you on an emotional roller coaster, complete with driving bass lines and all the overt psychedelic contrasts that properly served audio curves, peaks, and valleys would provide. Slightly deep, always danceable, with loads of dark and luscious texture. Expect all the trippy sounds that you never knew you always wanted.

Thank you to everyone that made our first 2023 gathering a success!

This is the opening set at 11pm, which ramps up to some funky, dirty breaks at around the 21 minute mark.

The first 20 minutes of chill and tribal house was crafted as an intro that sets the tone for the night, as the bonfire was lit in a spectacular fashion at about the  14 minute mark.

Intense but dance floor friendly.
Recorded somewhere in the Mojave Desert.

I had a short but sweet time at Bug Out Campout 4: Garden of Dreams on day 8 and 9 of my Spring Break roadtrip with my daughter, Cerise.

This set went down at midnight on a pretty frigid desert night, did my best to warm people up with some break and then some techno.  Ok, fine, there's. little house in there too :). Something for everyone, hope you enjoy!

Overall one of my faster sets, starting at 130bpm and creeping up to 132 by the end.

Definite highlight having Cerise bopping around to my breaks - she really has quite the dance moves!  She got cold tho and came and chilled for the rest of my set in back of the DJ booth while I moved more into techno.

Speaking of DJ booth, it was on point and I could hear great!  Sound system was proper for 1000, and decor and visuals were great too.  A lot of care was our into this little party, which of course is close to my heart ♡

Bug Out was intimate and fun!  I wish I had more time there but the time I was there I got to connect with some friends and some new people, all good vibes 🙂

 I hope to be back next year and stay longer- but it also  worked perfectly in this Spring Break adventure this time tbh.

With honor and overflowing gratitude I am pleased to share this recording from Moontribe's 30Year anniversary. 

Gathering in sacred celebration of the Moon, to dance with the music, and share what we find dear and special within ourselves, and with each and every one-another, is what brings us round moon and moon again... Finding ourself being guided by this reverence throughout the journey, pulled by the waves of mystique reflecting through Luna's glow.

This was a particularly potent gathering of hearts and souls for me and many of us there. I found myself overjoyed, overwhelmingly held, and loving and being loved beyond words, in ways I may have only dreamed.

Being asked to bring music out for this 30th year was a momentous honor, inspiring a deeper reverence within me, pushing me to allow, share, create, and find my light, to shine and play and reflect with those whom were dancing on that sacred ground. Gratitude for each of you who invited me into the fold, encouraging me to grow from within, and giving your love on the dance floor, where we've always been. 

Love is a guide, a gift, an action. May we each be fortunate to find ourself living in love.

Ten years ago my life was changed when I attended my first FMG. Since then, Moontribe has been by large my greatest inspiration musically and it was a dream come true to get to contribute back to my favorite dance floor. The experience was everything I had hoped for and so much more.

Van Michael is a DJ and producer attuned to a simple purpose: Help the world and have fun; Embrace play and listen to bliss. His evolving and organic sound is a celebration of the soulful dance that resides within each one of us. 

As a percussionist and performer with deep roots in the global electronic music subculture, Van’s performances and collaborations feature the legendary Moontribe Collective from California, Ozora USA, Global Eclipse Gatherings, Vortex and Stargate Festivals, Burning Man, Momentive Events, Music and Sky, and other budding world music projects. Van’s releases are currently out on Momentive Recordings and his own label, La Sound.

Van found his love for sonic delight with jams on improvised instruments as a child, sparking formal training as a percussionist, and leading him to journey deeper into music production and global collaboration. 

With sounds from deep veins of organic and electronic origins, Van Michael shares his productions and selections in celebration of the sound we find within ourselves. 

Ringing the sound system as a temple, a place of reverence, he meditates on subtle grooves, beckoning bliss and introspection, inviting a dance on the moonlit ground, in the journey to nirvana, celebrating rebirth and unity, with love for sharing the sounds we find within our soul.
