Joseph S Joyce’s 2014 dub techno hit ‘Vedanta’ returns in 2023 with fresh remixes from El Choop, Sebastian Mullaert, Van Bonn, Federsen, Paul 90 and more, on this six-track vinyl and digital package, coming via his own Default Position imprint this June.

The original "Vedanta", which featured remixes from the renowned Sebastian Mullaert, was met with acclaim and support from leading DJs such as Sven Väth and Joris Vorn. It was therefore only natural that a remix EP should follow.

Nearly a decade on and El Choop opens this new release with his ‘Reconstruct’ twist. The Echocord artist lays down a typically raw and subtly nuanced rework before Sebastian Mullaert returns once again with an ‘Ambient Mix’ providing, as the name would suggest, a cinematic journey through washed-out chords and subtle melodies.

Freund der Familie and Kontakt artist Van Bonn steps up next, with a slick, reduced, dub techno take before San Francisco’s Federsen shifts focus to tribal-tinged drums and deep hazy atmospherics.
Paul 90, follows with his ‘Basement Mix’ offering up a deep house-leaning aesthetic via bubbly chord sequences, crisp percussion, and dubbed-out vocal hooks. Joyce’s own ‘Live Revisit’ rounds off the release and comes as a free bonus download with each copy of the vinyl.

Number 7 of our OYE Podcast Series is coming from a well-known figure in the dub techno music industry. We are very happy to have him delivering a mix for us. Thanks Kenneth Christiansen

Kenneth is the owner of Echocord Records one of the most relevant dub techno labels, which has recently celebrated 20 years of activity. He is also running the Echocord sublabel Echocord Colour, and the label and project Pattern Repeat with his long-time friend Resoe. 

Since the late 1990s, Kenneth has frequently been spinning at Tresor in Berlin and other popular clubs and festivals all over Europe. His career in the genre dates back to his time spent working in record stores, running clubs and festivals in his hometown Copenhagen.

Laenk, as is customary, did not come to be embraced by the guest column empty-handed.

At first glance, the abandoned village within the boundaries of anomaly 418-R is unremarkable: run-down houses, windy paths, and courtyards covered with neglected thickets. However, fluorescent rain has been pouring down from a cloud that stuck above it for a thousand years.

That is why the soil around it has turned into a shining canvas, which can become a suitable illumination for any event. One of them was a DJ festival held under the auspices of the Venus Biomolecular Institute. The goal of the organizers was to identify through a visual method the fundamentals of the influence that music has on humans.

As a master from the registry of the audio stream management, Laenk was invited to the experiment. His mixing of sound volumes is famous for its ability to program the listener with rhythmic vibrations. To make the interaction as efficient as possible, it is necessary to add hidden dub textures full of chilling echoes from Van Bonn, punchy grooves with explosive percussion from Artyom Kozlov, and a composition filled with synth light from Elpierro.

Andrea Cichecki stands out as an exceptionally dedicated and impassioned audio and media artist deeply entrenched in the realm of music. Her engineering expertise has spanned sessions involving mastering, mixing, and other intricate tasks for the studio's high-profile clientele. Beyond engineering, Andrea is in high demand as a producer, remixer, and collaborator.

Notably, she initiated 'Texture Studies,' spontaneous sonic explorations featuring live performances with a modular synthesizer. These sessions provide a platform for capturing, sculpting, and performing with raw tones and waveforms. Andrea's distinctive sonic identity thrives in the melancholic layers of electronic music, spanning ambient, contemporary, and experimental genres, as well as dub techno and sound design.

Following his much-acclaimed full-length „The Predicting Machine“ (KOMPAKT 267 CD 102) and a slew of pop-infused 12“ singles - „We Can Pretend“ (KOMPAKT 286) and „Somewhere“ (KOMPAKT 264) -, LA-based synth mastermind JOHN TEJADA returns with new album SIGNS UNDER TEST: comprised of all-new material, this latest effort sees the studio wizard digging deeper into his modules, unearthing particularly dreamy tracks that rank among John's most accomplished work to date.

From the get-go, SIGNS UNDER TEST presents itself as a whole new ball of wax, reaching even further into the depths of JOHN TEJADA's hot-wired synth machinery, while cranking up the already stunning levels of musicality on display in his oeuvre. Opener TWO 0 ONE serves as a prime example for the sonic aplomb in place, thanks to its beautifully rendered melodies and finely tuned textures – a perfect storm made of cosy melancholy and celestial bliss. This expertly wrought piece serves as a particularly strong entry point for the album, setting the bar high for its successors.

An unabashedly brilliant listen, the album continues its thrilling journey with existential bleepfest Y 0 WHY and the bass-heavy BEACHT, followed by the intricately arpeggiated R.U.R. and brooding electronica vignette VAALBARA. The second part is ringed in by the undulating CRYPTOCHROME - another proof for JOHN TEJADA's uncanny ability to craft tracks that operate as distinguished bouncers as well as introspective meditations. The deliberate vivacity of connecting cuts RUBRIC and PENUMBRA only confirms the growing suspicion that this might be a timeless masterpiece we're dealing with.

As gorgeous as it sounds, texture isn't the only star here: a surprisingly diverse set of rhythm patterns suffuses the mesmerizing synth licks - take for example the multilayered ENDORPHINS effortlessly switching between straight techno stylings and vintage breakbeat ornaments. Meanwhile, electronic landscape painting MEADOW purrs away on its road to redemption, priming the listener for closing cut HEAVE IN SIGHT, an atmospherically rich composition that marries abstract storytelling with a flurry of reversed synth sounds.

„There's a bit more dreamy tape wobble going on throughout“, says the producer about his latest effort, „as I’ve gone quite analog tape with my delays and patches - on the verge of actually being broken, which gives them a nice character.“ It also might explain the air of intimacy surrounding the album - a quite personal listening experience taking the listener up close with its details and idiosyncracies, „maybe even more than before, as I’ve tried to cut out distractions and really focus on the production.“
The result is a record that is not meant to be trendy, even though it’s a product of analog hardware connoisseurship: „Everything is built from the ground up using hardware synths - mostly analog, but that’s a bit annoying to say nowadays. It’s not a record that fits in with any current stuff, but something that hopefully holds up as it ages. Something that hopefully reveals more on repeated listens.“ In our humble opinion, this mission has been more than accomplished with SIGNS UNDER TEST.

Biography:
If you would go fishing to the wide and deep lake next to mount dub, you can expect to find Van Bonn sitting there – right in the moment to catch huge delays and frequence modulations to create the next dubby excursion, which he is known for.

More than 20 years ago Van Bonn started his musical journey. He collected his first experience in producing electronic music using tracker programs, played drums in the metal/hardcore band Muad’dib, created ambience and fx in the instrumental rock outfit Long Distance Calling, shaped abstract and layered ambient landscapes with his alter ego Kadrage and played collaborative concerts in experimental music genres, scored and sound designed movies, clips and homepages. Yes, he also held a club residency in his hometown Münster over a couple of years.

He found his music in the top 40 sales charts and on worldwide dj playlists. A couple of labels who released music with his contribution are Superball, telrae, Traum and Trapez next to sampler contributions on M_nus and fabric. To enable Van Bonn to release his very own vision of sound, he founded Van Bonn Records. Over the years he played hundreds of stages over Europe ranging from huge festivals and clubs to squatted swimming pools. He shared stages with artists and bands such as Opeth, Deftones, Mogwai, Roisin Murphy, Youth of Today, Snapcase, Minilogue and Max Cooper, among countless others.

Now, he enjoys to go fishing to mount dub. And all the experience he gathers along his ride contribute as inspiration for Van Bonn’s next dubby journey to be created.
