This piece was written in response to a set of photograms from Aleksandra Vajd’s The Thirty-Six Dramatic Situations, which features two parallel lines, each changing colour halfway. To me this work is about things in flux, things moving toward or away from something else. In my piece, I am interested in how players might focus on periods of instability and change within and between sounds. By leaving the score more open, I hope to provide more space for the players to follow their curiosity and their ears, to be responsive to the sounds and to each other in the moment. - SL

"Sylvia’s piece is a rare occurrence: a simple, relatively undefined score that does not provide instructions for formal development over the entirety of the piece, yet immediately, the first time we rehearsed it, it was clear that the piece had a clear-cut character and a complex web of internal relationships. The simplicity and directness of Vajd’s photograms is here transformed into a focus on all the chaotic and noisy shadows, interferences, and byproducts that appear when players are tasked with exploring well-chosen, fluctuating effects and various transitions between them. Here, instability is always present at multiple levels — perhaps we could even speak of an interaction between instabilities, a dusty sonic layer covering the simple material play of the photograms." - Ian Mikyska

INNER THOUGHTS

Jako Maron, was born in St Denis, Reunion Island in 1968. He developed an interest in electronic music composition from the late 90’s and for the last 15 years began experimenting with the tertiary and binary beats of Maloya music via modular synthesis and drum machines. This album compiles for the first time his electro-Maloya experiments.

Traditional Maloya described the songs, music and dances of slaves of sugar plantations of Réunion Island in the 17th Century – Maloya ceremonies paid tribute to ancestors and mediated between the living and the dead. The music and culture began to be more widely accepted by Réunionese society from the 1930s as folklorist Georges Fourcade began to play Maloya songs. By the ‘50s, Maloya tracks were appearing on 78rpm releases and, in the ‘60s, it was used as a form of cultural protest music. In the mid-‘70s, a new generation began exploring new directions in the music, using Créole language and may different styles of Maloya music emerged. Jako Maron explores the full spectrum of these styles through his electronic re-interpretations of his native lands music.

VANCRYNES is the musical alter-ego of Angelo Saridis, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer from South Gippsland, Australia. His music spans the genre spectrum with roots in early punk and post punk and a solid grounding in 90s alternative rock, his music fuses these influences with a deliberate intention.  Imagine Paul Dempsey and Tim Rogers had a love child with Black Francis and Kim Gordon as the godparents and Johny Marr as the favourite uncle...somewhere in that mix you will find VANCRYNES

Exploring themes that are predominantly a shared introspective reflection, there is a happy sad dynamic and a nostalgic sensibility to all the songs.  'I'm trying to share what's anxiety provoking for adults...and show that none of us really have our shit together...but at times there's something beautiful about admitting our failings and insecurities'.

VANCRYNES is guitar driven, sweat soaked and authentic which at times will make the listener chuckle and other times give you a reason to reflect.  It's still very much punk rock at heart but delivered with an equal portion of sensitivity and recklessness.

VANCRYNES is committed to capturing the immediacy of the songwriting process and moves quickly to capture songs as the moments of creation are fleeting 'I just want to get a general sense of the song recorded and move on to the next one.  If the songwriting is strong enough, then I hope it will carry through the more casual production approach.  My production is very loose and I will never even contemplate something like autotune'.  

Keeping it fresh and committed to the creative practice of songwriting, VANCRYNES sticks to a blistering regime of writing, producing and releasing with more than 100 songs completed in 2022 and that frenetic pace continues into 2023 and now 2024.  'To quote the famous philosopher Lloyd Christmas...I can't stop once I've started....it stings'
