This session will look at the complicated relationship between the state and different music scenes/communities, and the different possible routes to navigate these complexities. In Manipur, for example, music becomes a way to document and represent the human toll of insurgency and counter-insurgency in ways that are less likely to be censored by the state, while in Bangladesh, Baul musicians have been targeted by both radical Islamists and the government for their syncretic, unorthodox views on Islam and society. There’s also the political dimension of what music gets support from the state, and what effect that has on the content and narratives around that music, especially in the case of oral traditions. How do activists and politically minded musicians, especially those critical of the state, find ways to get their message across while avoiding state action? At the same time, how do cultural activists, ethnographers and those involved in the music industry deal with the appropriation and co-option of originally subversive musical traditions by the state or its surrogates in the favour of capitalism, nationalism and soft power? What are the various degrees of risk associated with being a musician who performs political roles?

Episode 2: The Carrot And The Stick

Social and protest movements tend to inspire a flurry of protest music and performance, but not all protest songs are created equal. Certain songs have the power to capture the imagination in unprecedented ways, either by bringing different people together as a social/political community, urging them to action, or commemorating the revolutionary and egalitarian ideals of a particular movement. Examples include Victor Jara’s Estadio Chile, penned in the days before his torture and execution by the Chilean Army, which has become a symbol of Chileans’ defiance in the face of tyranny. Or Inno Della Resistenza by the Choir of FLN Fighters, a song of the rebellion that became Algeria’s national anthem and “helped crystallize the concept of a nation,” according to Nabil Boudraa. For this session, we’ll invite our experts to present a key song from social/political movements in their territories that had an oversized impact and dissect their background and influence, with an eye on the lessons that contemporary cultural activists can draw from this history.

A superb surprise episode for 041 in the series. Massive thanks to Nick Sneddon for sending over some epic CDs recently. We are really happy to feature more downtempo CDs... it feels like the recovery soundtrack to countless nights clubbing and those sun kissed days that followed (well maybe not so much if you grew up in the UK).

Considering this came out in 1996, it features some simply gorgeous deep house and laid back electronic which go onto cement why DJ Harvey is a cult dj amongst fans and fellow spinners. It's a pleasure not just remember my own collection, but have other people send in theirs. And it's even better discovering that there's hundreds of other classics out there which need to be shared with everyone. Thanks again for the good vibes.

Actress' highlight reel needs little exposition. Darren J. Cunningham has been a prominent yet inscrutable figure in electronic music since the late 2000s, typically flickering to life from the margins before receding into the shadows. Beloved albums like R.I.P., Karma & Desire and Splazsh may switch up the template, but the Actress hallmarks of haze, murk and showstopping beauty remain.

As you'll see in the interview below, he's a man of few words—that's in character for him. What's characteristic, too, is a taste for surprises. Ahead of the release of tenth studio album Statik on esteemed Norwegian label Smalltown Supersound next month, here's the "Дарен Дж. People tend to remember the first time they see BEIGE DJ—and a lot of the times after, too. One RA editor described them as "doing some crazy shit" after seeing a set. The Detroit DJ is all about playing to party rock, but also gently subverting expectations. It's a cliché now that good DJs can make whole new tracks out of blending existing songs together. Few embody this as easily or effortlessly as BEIGE, who loves to take sounds you already know and present them in a context you've never heard them in before.

BEIGE started DJing after they moved to Detroit roughly a decade ago, and has since become a vital DJ in the Motor City's ecosystem, bridging gaps, scenes and genres. Their DJing style is adaptable and versatile, but you can count on a few things: a techno foundation, rollicking drums, throbbing basslines and vocals coming at you from all angles. 

Their RA Podcast flows beautifully, with just the right amount of bumps and left turns to keep you from getting comfortable. And the edits? There's plenty of head-turning moments here, like DJ Chap's downtempo drum & bass remix of seminal emo band American Football, a 150 BPM version of "Energy Flash," a cheeky Skrillex flip from Darian and excellent weirdo beats from the freakier ends of the US underground, including producers like Davis Galvin, Alien D and the late Jasen Loveland.
