What is Left is the fourth Solo album from Vanessa Anne Redd. 

“What is Left” is about endings and beginnings. It’s what’s left when everything is stripped away. 

It was written in caves, vineyards, up mountains and surrounded by escaped sheep. It was made making the best of every moment. It’s about love, making love, being love, of finding the beauty in people and life even when things are at their worst.

It’s an ode to the joy of life. It’s joy passes through the Garage rock glam stomp of “In for the Long Haul” and the trumpet stab grooving bass and drums of “Regained”. It’s about leaning in with the cosmos psych folk of “Leaner to the Light”, the power of intimacy through the repetitive bass groove curving round Vanessa’s soft sweet growl and harmonies of “Give me a Window” and the melodic French Horn and dissonant violin fury in the bookends of “Dark of the Sun”. It’s about  positive action, taking a stand however small, the power of change in the country tinged lap-steel hued “A Whistle can Lead a March”. 

The album’s songs pass through Transitions, instrumental sections that pass up and down like transitions in life, through the darkness of modular oscillations and the rise and light of droning violins and brass and high soprano operatic moments.

It’s a winding journey that comes to an end intimately with the minimalness of the solo piano title track “What is Left” about legacy and the memory of loved ones.  We’re led gloriously into the power and strength of nature and human love in the epic “Everything Else Pales” with it’s Wurlitzer, Hammond drone, guitar fuzz and Cale-esque strings, until we’re finally cradled into the quiet of the birds.

Manchmal sind wir von Menschen umgeben und fühlen uns trotzdem einsam. Mein Song „Eigene Welt“ erzählt von dieser unsichtbaren Mauer zwischen uns – von Sehnsucht, verlorener Nähe und dem Wunsch, wirklich verstanden zu werden.

palette of guitars from sweet finger picked folk to fuzz droning. Sweeping melodies mix cathartic, light, country tinged ebbing harmonies through to percussion, piano sparkles, uplifting swathes of hammond, stabbing brass and strings.
She’s just finishing her fourth solo record to be released later this year following on from her last LP “Sweet Way Around”, her critically acclaimed solo debut “Behind the Wall” and “Zumbo Waxes”. She’s inspired by artists such as Julie Collins, Karen Dalton, Can, Holly Go-Lightly, Nico, Leonard Cohen, Billy Childish and Angel Olson. 
Vanessa records using analogue tape giving her sound warmth and grit, using Toerag Studios (White Stripes) for her debut and Gizzard Analogue Studios (Holly Golightly) for her following records. Her sound is sweet yet tough and is described by Vanessa as “a simple grunge-folk affair”. She’s received support from BBC Radio’s Steve Lamacq, Lauren Laverne, Janice Long and Radio X’s John Kennedy, along with a coveted Album of the Month recommendation by UK music magazine Loud & Quiet, and praise by magazines such as Songwriter, UNCUT, RnR and Clash Magazine. 
 She has previously released albums as part of electronic act Rubicks, and alt-folk duo Six Years, has toured the UK, Europe, Canada and the USA with the likes of Gary Numan and John Foxx and played SXSW and Canadian Music Week. She also tours extensively in Germany and sings with German cult indie band Phillip Boa and the Voodoo Club.
Her music has been released through her co-owned label Sharp Attack Records and licensed to Universal, Mute, Modular DJ’s and Rough Trade compilations. It has appeared in fashion films (Valentino/Pam Hogg) and skate/snowboarding videos. 
She makes her own films and videos to accompany her music.
