The term "Celtic" is a loose catch-all that includes traditions from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Brittany, Cornwall, and one or two exotic corners of northern Spain. There is much debate as to whether or not there is a place for the mandolin in Celtic mandolin, but it's the instrument I play and so to my mind the answer is a resounding YES! I first became interested in "Celtic" music by tracing its influence in American old time and bluegrass music. Listening to the ornaments and rhythms that the fiddles, hornpipes and bagpipes were able to produce made me wonder if a mandolin could get in on all that action. I think it can...
