In recent years London has become an epicenter for experimental, visionary jazz. On this unique session, two of the finest exponents of the London jazz scene, Tamar Osborn and Al MacSween, join forces with members of the celebrated Danish psychedelic underground - Jonas Munk, Jakob Skøtt and Martin Rude – to create a heady sonic brew. On this first volume of material there's everything one could hope for in such a collaboration: sonically it summons the free flowing euphoria of Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders' work in the late 1960s and early 1970s. But there's also a focus on rhythmic energy and vitality that calls to mind the grooviest krautrock or electric period Miles Davis, as well as a healthy dose of electronic experiments. 

Throughout these eight tracks the quintet paints with a colourful palette. Tamar Osborn shifts between baritone sax and flutes. Keyboardist Al MacSween doesn't just stick with the tried and true electric piano - an instrument which he masters - but showers these tracks in analog synths and effects as well. Add to that the fact that Jonas Munk took a somewhat creative approach when editing and mixing these pieces – with effects boxes wired in, occasionally giving the mix a dubby, ambient atmosphere. Similar to Munk and Skøtt's main project, Causa Sui, digging into the past becomes a vehicle to open up the future. What the quintet has created in these sessions is something quite unique.

Bios:
Tamar Osborn: 
Saxophonist, composer and multi-wind instrumentalist is the creative force behind modal jazz ensemble Collocutor (On The Corner Records). She is a member of the Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Orchestra, performs and collaborates regularly with Sarathy Korwar, Jessica Lauren, Emanative, Ill Considered and DJ Khalab.

Al MacSween: 
Keyboard player & founding member of Kefaya. Collaborations include American jazz legend Gary Bartz, Syrian qanun master Maya Youseff, London Community Gospel Choir, Palestinian jazz singer Reem Kelani & kora player Kadialy Kouyate.


Martin Rude: 
Multi-string instrumentalist & lead singer in Sun River. Doubles as stand-in bass player in Causa Sui.

Jakob Skøtt: 
Drummer in Causa Sui with a slew of side projects on El Paraiso, including Chicago Odense Ensemble, as well as being responsible for the label’s visuals.

Jonas Munk:
Guitarist in Causa Sui & studio wizard on most releases on El Paraiso. Also works with a wide palette of electronic music.

An early, transitional cut by The Nightcrawlers, recorded as a duo shortly before Dave Lunt completed the trio, “Luv-Li-Musik” (from 1982’s cassette Synthmania), released as a digital single from Anthology Recordings The Biophonic Boombox Recordings, showcases an unusually harder edge for the act’s patented electronic kozmik drift. That’s not to say that the Gulch Brothers had detoured into a precursor of fluorescent rave ala Manuel Göttsching’s E2-E4 (recorded a year earlier, and released two years later). Rather, the interlocking motifs of the track highlight the group’s interest in pattern music ala Steve Reich, who was an influence not only on The Nightcrawlers’ beloved Berliner Schule (of which Göttsching was a member), but also on the Philadelphia experimental scene centered around University of Pennsylvania radio station WXPN and Philadelphia’s Painted Bride Art Center. In it, you can hear the distinct quality each one of the two brought to the aggregation: rising and falling ambient beds, mysterious and lush, pillowing the intensity of Peter Gulch's hypnotically repetitive patterns, while Tom Gulch's minor key soloing pierces through, capturing the imagination.  So in tune to the talents of one another were The Nightcrawlers that “Luv-Li-Musik” is an improvisation that could easily pass as composition. And with the addition of Lunt and his experimental background, they would soon commence launch into the deepest regions of space.

International psych explorers Flamingods are back with brand new album ‘Levitation’ (3 May, Moshi Moshi Records) and have announced a run of dates including their biggest headline show to date at London’s Village Underground on 1 May.

The first single to be unveiled is ‘Marigold’, a multi-sensory psych-rock trip that finds  Flamingods on hair-raising form even by their own exuberant standards. ‘Marigold’ oozes fun out of every pore, a perfect antidote to turbulent times.

‘Levitation’ is inspired largely by the disco, funk and psychedelic sounds coming out of the Middle East and South Asia in the 70s, the album channels these influences through a vision soaked in mysticism, positivity and sun-drenched imagery.

‘Levitation’ is the follow-up to Flamingods’ breakthrough 2016 album ‘Majesty’ 
The band will be taking their incendiary live show to venues around the UK in April and May in support of the record, as well as a one-off-date supporting Omar Souleyman in Bristol January 31st.

The tune serves as a testament to The Hive’s gift for songwriting and arrangement, taking the listener on a ride from the first notes of Paul’s falsetto to the outro featuring Dave Guy’s (The Roots) gorgeous trumpet solo.

About The Freelancer's Blues

The Freelancer’s Blues, the second full-length LP from Brooklyn’s country crooner Dougie Poole, captures its cur-rent moment like nothing else. Poole updates the story-telling backbone of country music for an audience that is young, urban, romantically alienated and financially pre-carious, using the same threads spun by Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson before him to write his own anthems for a new generation of country music fans. With his debut album Wideass Highway Dougie Poole established himself as forerunner in a class of musicians who grew up in a post-genre ecosystem equally as likely to be influenced by Ariel Pink and Animal Collective as Dolly Parton and Dwight Yoakam. On The Freelancer’s Blues, Dougie graduates from drum machine and synthesizer bedroom country to a full band with honky-tonk harmonies, wailing pedal steel, and carefully constructed arrangements. Produced by Jonathan Schenke (PC Worship, Gong Gong Gong, Public Practice) The Free-lancer’s Blues does the seemingly impossible of staying true to Poole’s heritage in the DIY scenes of New York and Providence, while simultaneously certifying him as a country music bonafide.

About Dougie Poole

Dougie Poole is a musician and songwriter living in Brooklyn, New York. Coming of age in Providence, he dabbled in heavier and more exprimental music before maturing into a country auteur. He writes earnestly about his experience (life in the big city, heartbreak in the digital age) and approaches country as an experimental music form, as well as a tradition. He has shared tours nationally with Jerry Paper, Still Corners and Bong Wish, and in 2019 guested on the Drugdealer album Raw Honey.
