This was my first track using a leitmotif, an extremely common technique in video game and film music. Basically you take a short musical idea and tweak and twist it and explore all kinds of variants of it until you've turned one idea into several minutes of music!

I really like the writing and arranging I did for this piece, I just found my production execution (as usual) to be a bit lacking. I was a little too aggressive with my HP filters because I was trying to free up maximum room for the bass, which really grounds the rhythm the whole way through.

Also most parts are recorded using a keyboard. I'm not a keyboard player so some of it feels a little sloppy despite my best efforts in editing.

All in all, though, it's the most complex and lush piece I've ever written and I hope you can enjoy it despite its faults.

Homecoming

Sometimes you just dispense with the niceties and make a glorious noise. Such is the case with Laxá's "Better Angels". 

Recorded in a derelict swimming pool off Sloat, the sonics were perfect. Swirling guitars, distant drums and distorted keyboards  captured the dereliction. The crumbling graffitied concrete walls echoed to the sound of a band both of, and not of, their time. The low buzz throughout the track is the sound of sampled traffic savagely distorted.

As darkness fell, a few curious passers by stopped to listen, witnesses to a singular happening in place and time.

A dusty Nebula

If you're new to Laxá, "The Last Small Square of Light" is the second track from their new album "I Live Here Now". 

There's no raging against the dying of the light it's just getting dark. 

Matthias' Jamaican influenced drums are to the fore, while Mike's keyboards have a haunting fairground ring to them, whistful and sinister. 

Bjarne's bass is a heavy undercurrent allowing Jussi's guitars to thread their way through the soundscape. 

And the vocals? They're Bjarne's choral howl.

Desirous Waiting

The inspiration for this song? A drive out of town late at night, sitting and talking, laughing and gazing across the city to the ocean and the stars, seemingly below on a cool, clear night. 

Jussi,  with acoustic guitar in hand, strummed the main rhythm and the rest came together in the studio the next day.

Dramatic and sweeping, the guitars resonate from here to there, crossing the space in between.
