Checkmate Queen*

Overture written for opera, music fully composed by me, rest of piece is work in progress.

Opera No.1 - Overture

This is the main theme of the play ‘At Dawn, the Light is Harsher’, written by Mihaela Michailov and directed by Radu Apostol.

Olga Bancic was an anti-fascist fighter, born in 1912 in Chișinău, Bessarabia, and executed in 1944 by the Nazi authorities. A member of the Manouchian Group, part of the French Resistance, Olga dedicated her life to an ideal that demanded ultimate sacrifices. Her story, however, is complex: a symbol of courage for some, a controversial figure for others. The play delves into this duality, offering a deeply human perspective on the impossible choices dictated by the times.

Collaborating with director Radu Apostol was of immeasurable importance in creating the musical theme. The clarity and sensitivity with which he communicated his vision were essential in translating the emotion and tension of Olga’s story into sound. His careful guidance allowed me to deeply understand each moment of the play, every nuance of its characters, and the historical context. Without this artistic dialogue, the composition would have been just a piece of music, not an integral part of a story that resonates with the questions of our time:

How do we discern good from evil in times of chaos?
How do we perceive those who fought, sacrificing everything – even their humanity – for an ideal?
‘At Dawn, the Light is Harsher’ is more than a play about the past. It is a dialogue with the present, an invitation to reflect on history and the complexity of human choices.

In the nights before, the shamans watched the sky.
Strange lights moved across the darkness — silent, unlike any star.

Some saw spirits. Others saw omens.
No one understood.

Then came the day of the encounter.

It was forty thousand years ago,
on the wild lands of ancient Europe.

The sky was clear. The air, tense with something unseen.

And then — an enormous shadow.

A ship. Floating. Silent. Unreal.

The people froze. Some knelt.
Others raised their hands, answering a call they couldn’t name.

No words were spoken. No threats made.
Only presence.

The first close encounter of the third kind.

And ever since, the memory drifts, buried deep in our species’ soul.

Like a forgotten dream.
Like the origin of a secret we were never meant to understand.

Les nuits qui précédèrent, les chamanes observaient le ciel.
Des lumières inconnues y dansaient, silencieuses, loin des étoiles connues.

Certains y voyaient des esprits. D’autres, des signes.
Aucun ne comprenait.

Puis le jour de la rencontre arriva.

C’était il y a quarante mille ans, sur une terre d’Europe encore vierge.

Le ciel était clair. L’air, chargé de tension.
Et soudain, une ombre.

Un vaisseau gigantesque. Suspendu. Silencieux. Irréel.

Les humains s’arrêtèrent. Certains se prosternèrent.
D’autres levèrent les bras, comme pour répondre à un appel venu d’ailleurs.

Il n’y eut ni mots, ni gestes hostiles.
Juste une présence.
Une première rencontre du troisième type.

Depuis, le souvenir flotte, flou, inscrit dans la mémoire profonde de l’espèce.
Comme un rêve oublié.
Comme l’origine d’un secret que personne ne comprend vraiment.
