Since Amani Friend (of Desert Dwellers, Liquid Bloom) met Alex DeYoung in 1995, the duo has experienced many forms of electronic music. As the scene has shifted and evolved, the two producer's paths have ebbed and flowed in and out of each other's lives. After a long hiatus, Variant Field have come to Gravitas Recordings for their first EP in over a decade, Immeasurable. Represented via three original tracks, two edits, and remixes by Lil Fish and DISSØLV, Immeasurable evokes a timeless space, a portal beyond the edge of genres and boxes. Immeasurable nods to several nodes along the electronic music spectrum the two have experienced since the mid '90s, while bringing the music into modern bass realms. Through this, Variant Field has successfully masterminded an emotive, cinematic piece of work that is in perpetual flux.
 
In winter, a mysterious "Silhouette" stands tall in front of the dark gateway, welcoming listeners as she ushers them through the arch. Rewinding time, autumn re-emerges and courages "Letting Go" through hypnotic, melodic beats. "Immeasurable" is an explorative odyssey that floats through a tranquil nebula. Contributing their own creations of the title track, Lil Fish incorporates hypnotic chants and ethereal world influence that precedes wobbly bass energy, while DISSØLV adds dominant yet quivery basslines to the ether. Fast forwarding to spring, "Letting Go" further propels the enchanting, tribal excursion. Coming full circle in summer, "Silhouette" is a darker, more modern IDM offering that pulls listeners back through the gateway and shuts the portal.

I dialed in a 16 step sequence on my NLC Bindubba, made it a 32 step sequence working the direction inputs with clocked gates. The sequence is fed through Beers ADC into Beers Melakarta making it a sudo pitch quantizer. Pitch-CV is sent to Befaco Even VCO. Even VCO feeds into a modulated Erica Synths BBD Delay/Flanger and then into Erica Synths Polivoks filter. Melakarta's gate outs are fed through Beers Edge Detector, into Sin Phi Miasma (envelope generator) to open the Polivoks filter, at the same time the other Miasma channel is feeding a ducking envelope closing the filter with every kick drum hit. A copy of this voice is fed into XAOC Sarajewo BBD delay. Aside from this last module, all other modules used are self-built DIY versions.

Born from a path of shared experience and kinship, Variant Field is a fusion of two minds traversing the boundless landscapes of beat-driven electronica from one chapter of musical history to the next. Touching on every tempo and instilled with the energy and spirit of warehouse, club, desert, and festival culture, the project draws upon technical influences from years recent and past while reveling in its creators’ enduring instincts to explore, expand, and reshape concepts lying at the core of music and the greater human experience.

After meeting in Santa Fe, NM in the mid-nineties, producers Alex DeYoung and Amani Friend (Desert Dwellers, Liquid Bloom) began producing electronic music together in 2004, developing a distinct sound that collided the cerebral influence of IDM and UK electronica with a genre-blending array of fast and downtempo beats, heady breaks, deep bass, and rich dub rhythms that spoke to their mutual love of underground music and dance floor culture. Building on musical themes that had endured through the decades, DeYoung and Amani’s releases displayed a timeless and technical quality that bore the hallmarks of numerous musical styles yet could not be decisively placed into any single genre. They began releasing these deep and cinematic stylings in 2008 under the banner of Variant Field and quickly found favor in the international scene, with releases on Iboga Records, Merkaba Music, Interchill Records, Twisted Records, and Desert Trax lining their discography in the years that followed.

A portal to the unfolding story of electronica through time, Variant Field’s compositions occupy a space between niches and deviate from the traditional constraints imposed by genres, tempo ranges, and the everlasting battle between light and darkness that has come to define music scenes across the globe. Whether inoculating ambient soundscapes with syncopated drumwork and heavy bass, blending acid-style synth progressions with classical instrumentation and mid-tempo beats, or conjuring opulent psychedelic atmospheres alongside the warm and soothing rhythms of boom bap, the duo’s sonic identity is rooted in the notion that music is a spectrum without limits — flexible, expansive, and perpetually in flux.
