"My initial idea was to play an improvised sequence with my electronic drum kit, triggering my drum machine which had synthesised drums layered with different sample cuts of Paola's vox, and then quantise the output for maximum dancefloor enjoyment. My original stylistic intent was something in between fast electro and drum & bass, so I was a bit surprised to end up with this grimey uk techno. I programmed the drum machine so that each drum channel had an LFO randomising which vocal sample was layered on top of it. I had maybe 15 different samples, but I made copies of them before uploading to my drum machine so that all 127 sample slots were filled. I used cat-related file names randomised by an AI-generated bash script in order to further randomise the selection.

That is the extent to which I am willing to use AI in my music making. I used different LFO shapes and ranges - some were more random and flipped through many different samples, or some used a square wave which only randomised between two samples. When I had the program sounding nice, I played it a bit on my drum kit and hated it, so I retired to the sofa with my drum machine and played it at a much slower tempo. First take was glorious. All of the seemingly well-placed vocal samples were completely random. This was especially amazing towards the end of the track. During the mixing process, I only added some additional snare hits, the reesey laser bassline, and the break with Paola's stretched voice. Drums and vox were printed in the same tracks, so the mix could have been much better, but I loved the first take too much to fuck with it. This was such a fun approach with wondrous results. The vocal samples were really great to work with and definitely suited the unintentional style that it came to be."  =D
