Continuing on from his Odyssey EP released in 2013, Ryan Lee West aka Rival Consoles creates atmosphere and space whilst exploring waves of sound and rhythm, and the power of colour. With Sonne Ryan creates music to structure itself around a pulse, rather than the pulse being the defining point. 

The title track begins with “a very subtle set of melodies that repeat almost without confidence, and then gradually give way to a huge collage of colour and power”, as Ryan describes it. Not relying on a conventional beat, it’s a prime example of how an analogue synthesiser can create the power and momentum of a rhythm section. From the distorted waves in 3 Chords, growing and shrinking, to the rhythmic waves of constant speeding up and then slowing down in Recovery, it’s the Moog Voyager, Prophet and tape delay that make up the core sound of the EP. Whilst tracks like Helios, Haunt and Think Tank see West play live drums and acoustic guitar.

“I’m often looking at art in exhibitions and I always think to myself ‘why the hell don’t I have this much colour in my work?’ The answer in part I think is down to synthesis. It is very difficult to create colour without it sounding plastic. Colour in music is both the note combinations and the actual timbre of the sounds. There are lots of instances of very colourful ambient sounds, which I took great care to create for each song, using various methods – from passing analogue synths through chains of effects to chopping up random sequences of recordings and forming tiny collages." – Ryan Lee West

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Some might be surprised that London based electronic producer Ryan Lee West, the man behind Rival Consoles, shares a home with contemporary classical composers such as Nils Frahm, Ólafur Arnalds and Peter Broderick. And yet they have a lot more in common than expected. Fascinated by sound from an early age, Ryan chose to dedicate his time to studying, experimenting with and producing sound graduating from De Montfort University in Leicester. One consistent element in his musical journey has been his desire to create a more organic, humanised sound. Ryan often drafts early ideas on piano, violin and guitar, although the end result is much more electronic-laden. As an accomplished sound designer he has repeatedly performed at the Tate, and recently created a bespoke audio-visual performance for Boiler Room at the V&A. Ryan is currently composing music for a soon to be announced BBC production.

After supporting Luke Abbott on his recent UK tour and I Break Horses on their North American tour in spring, Ryan will debut his new live set with a special release show in London, followed by a string of West Coast U.S. dates culminating in Decibel Festival in late September – more details to be announced soon.

Following the release of his latest album, Oh !, Ezéchiel Pailhès hands his creations over to a cast of remixers for an EP that takes his experimental chanson into exciting, eclectic new realms. Building on his previous two albums, Oh ! found Pailhès further exploring the intersection between poetry and music, with his conservatoire-trained piano playing setting the mood and the song-writing verve of his many years in Nôze lingering in the background.

Parisian duo Archil & Leon are renowned for their innovative instrument designs and their productions. Here they bring their highly customised creative flair to “J’aimerais tant” with a subtle treatment that works glitchy processes into the romantic swoon of the original track in a tastefully inventive manner.

Sharing Pailhès’ accomplished approach to instrumentation, Oakland-based husband and wife duo The Saxophones gently unfurl a bed of bittersweet guitar, flute and sax underneath Pailhès’ downcast rendition of Victor Hugo’s words on “Oh ! Pourquoi te cacher ?”.

The one and only Chloé exercises her evocative twist on minimal wave as she orchestrates an array of synths to re-frame “Sans l’oublier”. The words of 19th Century poet Marceline Desbordes-Valmore, as sung by Pailhès, are embellished with a richly noirish composition that borders on the baroque.

Gautier Vizioz is a talented Parisian beatmaker who collaborates with a broad tapestry of local artists. His own interpretation of “Oh ! Pourquoi te cacher ?” glides between dream-pop reverie and deeply rooted funk – a fittingly luxurious backdrop to the song.

Brandt Brauer Frick take on “Wolf 359”, one of the album’s few instrumental tracks, and infuse Pailhès’ keys with their own organic timbres played with an electronic attitude. The lines blur between the motorik pulse of the core rhythm section, the skittering percussion played on top and the interplay of synthesised tones and raw piano.

"A grand piano is a particular kind of beast to play, which will only sound refined and beautiful if you command a strong control over the keyboard. Each slight change in touch results in a different timbre, which will be rewarded when used wisely and will be your trapdoor when you fail to hold the horses. I remember how I had to squeeze the music out of the grand piano in the Graz sessions, and while I enjoy listening to it now, I kept these recordings secret for a good while – they sound like a much younger version of myself to me, and a lot of the musical expressions from that time would be impossible for me to replicate today. Close friends whom I had shared the record with reminded me of it once in a while, and some of the pieces got released in other versions on the album Spaces in the meantime. But somehow, any piece of music you create wants to get out there in order to find you, which is why I’m glad to share this beast with you and do hope you enjoy listening to it too!

I was listening to some of the sound files I had made for past live performances to use as reference for a particular work. The file for a live performance in 2017, which I was supposed to appear but never did, really caught my attention. 

I have no idea what I was thinking at the time when I created the file with the looping processed water sound. All I can say is that the sound, though very simple, captured my heart in 2021. 

It was just a loop of some processed water sounds of different lengths, but there was a nostalgic comfort in it, like when I was still asleep in my mother's womb. 

In line with my concept as an artist, which is to "Multidirectionally considering aesthetics which are very familiar, often forgotten, concealed in nature or events, and finally reveal them," I discovered a beauty that I had seen many times but had been unaware for years in my Mac hard drive. It is very pleasant to listen to it by myself, so I present it here with some modifications to the original file.
