BassAgenda 205 ARA-U interview & Dez Williams guest mix

I am delighted to present US Electro Bass protagonist 'ILLEKTROLAB' to the mix series with an exclusive hybrid set of both mixing and machines. Recorded on Livid Instruments / Ohm 64 Controller. 

The set is comprised of all of ILLEKTROLAB's own work and includes some sneak peaks at some future vinyl releases forthcoming in 2022.

Jason McCracken has released on Satamile Records, Advanced Robotiks, Shipwrec and Brokntoys. It's all about quality not quantity and each of his five eps to date are bona-fide classics. These records are also now hard to get items so keep your eyes peeled when digging!

My introduction to ILLEKTROLAB was when I first heard the track "I Am Illektro" back in 2008 and it went straight into my favourite electro tracks of all time category. The only bad thing about it was that it took me years to find a copy!

ParallaX 001 | EKATA

Hydroz (aka Hydraulix) is the Miami Electro Bass outfit consisting of AshRock & JimiTheGenius. Together they have been releasing music since the early 2000’s and continue to push their sound till today. Drawing from their childhood influences (2 Live Crew, Debonaire Records, Cut It Up Def Records, MC A.D.E, Dynamix II, etc) to create their own unique hybrid.

With 20+ releases on labels like Kuad, Touching’ Bass, Monotone, Frite Nite, Zone, etc - and currently working on new material set to be released later this year, including a new track in this mix.

As a child of the 80’s Commuter was Inspired by all electronic music he could find; ranging from acid house, EBM, Synthpop, Electro, Rap/Hiphop, New Beat,House, Italo, early Techno and with a particular passion for Depeche Mode and Kraftwerk.

Since his recording debut in 2004 with the song ‘Electrostate of Mind , you can find his music on labels like : Zone, Cultivated Electronics, Skryptöm, Elektrofon, Bass Agenda, AFU Limited, Space Factory, Goog, Citizen and BoysNoize records.

Over the years, he has had the opportunity to remix various artists including Miss Kittin , John Lord Fonda, Captain Mustache or Nomenklatür, and to collaborate on the Roentgen EP with The Hacker.

In 2023 Commuter will be back with new music, so watch this space …..

ParallaX 003 | COMMUTER

Lee Cee started playing vinyl in 1997 and has always brought an eclectic sensibility to her sets, with varied taste in genres but mostly Acid, Electro and Techno.
She began her journey on the Free Party scene and as well as her hometown club, the legendary Club 69 in Paisley in 2002. Lee has played alongside legendary selectors such as DJ Pierre, Nightwave, Co-Accused, Dixon Avenue Basement Jams and Jerome Hill.

Lee has also been a resident for Tech-Know Radio on Glasgow’s Groove City station since 2019 and is well known for her diverse and infectious style, and an old school, intuitive approach to her all vinyl sets.

For this ParallaX mix the northern selector has, as always, graced us with a Vinyl only mix.

Lee wants to Shout out to Ara-U's new EP "No Future" on Co-Accused's label (CR003) which is out early August, there's a couple of tracks on this mix from it.

Hailing from West Palm Beach, Florida, Grow (@adamgrow) is a renowned producer and DJ who embarked on his musical journey in the early 1990s. Founder of CHP Recordings in 2007, his debut vinyl release, "Electronik Milk," gained significant recognition within the electro community. Additionally, Grow co-founded the band Ohverclock alongside Kounterakt from Code Rising, resulting in multiple album releases. Grow's distinctive style encompasses cleverly processed vocals, powerful basslines, and haunting synthesizer elements. CHP Recordings has been ramping up production tenfold as of late adding new artists to their roster, and celebrating repeated success on the Beatport electro chart. You’re definitely going to want to keep an eye on this label and hear what they have in store for us! Enjoy the mix!

ona:v is a Polish-born DJ, producer and promoter with an ear for textural techno and dark electro. A scientist by day and a DJ by night, the Edinburgh-based artist is an integral figure in her locale, both as a DJ and through event curation.
Having built an extensive track collection for several years, ona:v debuted on Edinburgh’s club circuit in 2019, with bookings across the UK making up her diary since. On home turf, ona:v plays regular gigs in Scotland’s biggest venues, having supported Ben Klock, SLAM, Fjaak, Anne, Isabel Soto, Clouds, EKATA and many others. Outside of Scotland, she closed
for Clouds and Randomer at The Cause, played at London’s Risen and Necropolis Festivals and in Berlin’s Mensch-Meier and About Blank. 2022 saw her Polish debut, and in 2021/22 she streamed from Berlin’s HÖR Radio. More recently, for two years in a row, she headlined the basement stage curated by Sisu at Hidden Door — a prolific visual art and music festival in Edinburgh, and performed multiple times at Scotland’s biggest festival – Terminal V.

In 2020, ona:v founded EPiKA, and started promoting EPiKA’s bi-monthly party called CiRCLE in Edinburgh. Here, she creates a nurturing environment for beginner female and non-binary DJs playing more underground flavours of electronics, with focus on techno. She also garners a radio residency on London’s Threads Radio and is an internal member and a resident DJ with the Sisu crew. Production-wise, she has released techno and electro tracks
on multiple compilations and released her debut EP, Response to the Techno Crisis, on Diffuse Reality in 2022.

State Of The Ether | Episode 21

We are insanely excited to present one of the brightest out-of-genre representatives of the electronic scene. Dust Devices is the experimental electronic music project of Cláudio Oliveira, a composer and sound designer from Porto, Portugal.
Since his first EP “Spectre Research” he has been blending the rhythmic influences from Industrial, EBM, Techno and Electro with cinematic textures, atmospheres and melodies derived from unconventional synthesis techniques.
He’s been able to showcase his music in multiple national and international venues and events, including the festivals Sonar, Semibreve and Neopop, and as a regular contributor for vinyl and digital releases of labels like Zodiak Commune Records, Diffuse Reality, Rapture and Mera.
“Spine Mirror”, his latest full-lenght album, extends those sonic explorations into a more dissonant, abrasive and mechanical approach, while breaking down and rearranging the compositional core of those genres.
Without losing sight of the elements that ignite a dancefloor, the narrative and evolving character of the music are the main focus of this project.

Which artists has influenced you the most? 
- Artists from the Industrial scene of the 80s/90s were the main reason I started exploring synthesizers and drum machines. 
Back in the day I was into Metal and artists like Fear Factory and Ministry provided the necessary crossover elements to grab me in, but projects like Skinny Puppy and NIN proved to me that those electronic machines were more than sound sources for atmospheric/background noises and could be used to write heavy music. 
At the same time, the "IDM" scene was becoming popular with Autechre, Aphex Twin and Amon Tobin and their innovative sound design/composition techniques were a major influence during those formative years, which continues to this day.

What new projects/releases with your participation are expected in the near future? 
- I've had 4 releases so far this year. An experimental soundtrack album called "Abrupt", one track on a compilation by Elberec, one track on the first vinyl release by Rapture and an EP called "Ruins", out now via Diffuse Reality Records. 
Currently I'm working on a new track for a future release with Zodiak Commune Records and experimenting with some different themes and directions, which might end up on a new EP by the end of the year or a follow-up to my 2023 album "Spine Mirror".

Which artists/labels is more relevant to you now? 
- To be honest, lately I've been trying to avoid listening to electronic dance music while I write my own stuff so I haven't been keeping up with that scene. 
I keep going back to the seminal releases by Warp, Skam and Rephlex as I love the grainy 90's sound and textures of those artists. FSOL releases like "Lifeforms" are also timeless; the narrative aspect of that music really resonates with me.  

What inspires you now to create music? 
- That changes all the time! It might be a movie, a single picture, an accidental sound from a synth or sampler... But I've been having lots of fun experimenting with odd time signatures, patterns and "riffs" inspired by Metal bands and adapting those to an electronic music context. My album "Spine Mirror" is based around those concepts but I feel I barely scratched the surface.

What set-up do you use when creating music?
- I sequence almost everything on Ableton but some ideas start on hardware. Some of the stuff I use all the time: Ensoniq Fizmo, Roland JD800, Arturia Microfreak, Elektron Monomachine and Korg MS2000. 
I also have a soft spot for old & obsolete software and have been exploring that world for the past couple of years, some stuff is really inspiring!

En esta ocasión la persona a petición propia prefiere mantener su anonimato bajo el nombre de FVB.

Gran conocedor de la escena de Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia y parte de europa, amigo y seguidor del sello, amante de la música en todos sus formatos y formas de expresión, gran conocedor de clubs y festivales nacionales e internacionales y una gran persona ante todo... sino existiera habría que inventarlo y como siempre mostrando un respeto inmenso por lo que de verdad es un Dj y su trabajo. 

Debemos decir que no es la primera vez que nos envía sesiones simplemente para que las escuchemos (Privadas), sin intención de ser publicadas en nuestra plataforma.

Pero... para nuestra sorpresa hace unos meses ha decido que elijamos una de ellas para participar en nuestro décimo aniversario del sello por iniciativa propia y nos hace especial ilusión poder compartirla con todos vosotros.

El mix consta de una gran dosis electro, con varios lanzamientos de Microm, pasando por tracks del jefe del escuadrón del electro español como es Iván, (Dark Vektor) y varias joyas más seleccionas con mucho gusto y coherencia para llevarte a una trepidante parte final que te dejará con ganas de más.
