David Anderson had a great knack for bringing people together. His Hairy Bear records store on Hope Street in 90s Belfast introduced a whole generation of DJs and record collectors in Northern Ireland to great music from around the world. His diverse sets at Shake Ya Brain & Tora Tora Tora in the Conor Hall on York Street and the Exploding Plastic Inevitable series across the city, created brilliant soundtracks for people looking an escape from the norm and the political tribalism of the time. The after parties in Toronto Street at Davey & Diane’s were known to go on for days, fuelled by the best chat and music.
Davey also devised a brilliant way of getting people stuck isolating during lockdowns together by creating a Sunday music service dedicated to getting cutting edge sounds to a weekly online congregation. This earned him the moniker Pastor Anderson and helped kick start the now legendary Plan B events series with Aidy McLaughlin. Davey sadly passed away after a relatively short illness in early 2022 and is sorely missed by family, friends & all who knew him.
Gary Irwin (The Vendetta Suite) & Timmy Stewart were two next generation artists lucky enough to benefit from Davey’s knowledge, influence & wicked sense of humour. They wanted to create a musical tribute in the vein of what Davey played or promoted in his record store and so ‘The Man Behind The Counter’ EP was born. To get these tracks released with Davey’s favourite label Nein Records is something both feel would have brought a wry smile to Mr Anderson’s face.

Back before acid house changed the world, Jaye was already ploughing a unique path playing weird and wonky musics of all flavours at squat parties and industrial based do’s, she flung herself whole heartedly and without concern for her safety into the oncoming tsunami of what we would end up tagging as house, techno or the multitude of varying descriptive titles it has been given and has stayed true to ‘our thing’ ever since.

Dancing wildly at dirt box, the mutoid waste parties, the hacienda, ministry of sound, tonka, moist, sabresonic set her up for the ‘90s where, while Jaye was behind the counters of a number of soho record shops during the day and doing the ambient ‘creamy meat’ show as bish on the legendary chillin’ FM pirate radio, she was often found behind the decks at the legendary WANG parties, the back room at Golden in Stoke on Trent, her residency at London’s sadly defunct END with the ‘for your pleasure’ crew and numerous long gone all nighters and late into the night dark room parties. Getting her second wind at the start of the 00’s via the ‘softmachine’ parties she ran alongside George ‘black merlin’ and Kyle & Johnny from ‘land of light’ she’s been playing regularly across the country for numerous nights such as LOVE MUSCLE & COSMIC SLOP in Leeds, HOMO BLOC & KISS ME AGAIN in Manchester and further a field as a resident at the KALA festival as well as Field Maneuvers, Love International and dimensions in Croatia. She is also the resident at long running & fiercely loyally supported Bristol party PLU, alongside Ranks which has carved out a name for interesting left of centre guests and a distinctly gnarly music policy.

Gabriel Szatan, Editor (RA): When mulling which direction to go in for RA's 1000th mix celebrations, many options came to mind. Some shadowy character 2-stepping around the fringe of our collective consciousness? An impossible-level IDM icon?

All tempting. But, ultimately, we are a DJ-forward publication and this is a DJ mix series. It felt truer to the history of the RA Podcast to release deep vault material from a time when the world of niche records felt different, tighter, more discrete.

The fourth-longest mix in the series' history is an unrepeatable marathon set recorded in 2012 at a superclub that no longer exists. 2012, incidentally, is farther away from 2025 than 2012 was from 2000... if we have to clock it, so do you.

It's the coming together of one British icon who passed away in 2020, and another whose time on the road has scaled back considerably as of late. DJ Harvey agreed to exactly one b2b set in his life: this one, with Andrew Weatherall.

The night took place at Trouw, an Amsterdam club already considered legendary before it shuttered its doors in the opening hours of 2015, as part of an RA series anchored around start-to-close combinations. Harvey was at the peak of an irresistible career second act, which dovetailed with a disco revival that dominated clubs for years. Weatherall, with infinite brownie points stockpiled from the '90s, remained everyone's favourite debonair psychonaut. 

What follows is 385 scintillating minutes of arpeggiated chug and slow-cresting climaxes, chronicling a moment when the resting heart rate of dance floors plunged lower than potentially any comparable point in the 21st century. A masterclass, and entirely self-contained in audio form.

If you've got time to spare, a fun side game is sussing out who plays what. A disco-dub cover of Echo & the Bunnymen? Smart money's on Weatherall. Exuberant EQ'ing of The Isley Brothers? Gotta be Harvey. As for the low 'n slow, lightly spangled house that was all the rage in the early 2010s (think Maxxi Soundsystem, Disco Bloodbath, Rub & Tug, C.O.M.B.I. and Full Pupp), it's anyone's guess. 127 BPM feels practically like a racecar.

When we kicked off our RA.1000 campaign, we outlined a few goals: tick off a handful of long-awaited dream guests, honour architects who shaped the world around us and deliver recordings you truly can't hear anywhere else. We sought to render an accurate picture of DJ culture in 2025 for the longhaul.

DJing and the mythmaking around it has undergone a quantum leap since 2012, let alone 2006, 1996 or 1989. For those of us who were kicking around in the former, there's a creeping melancholy that our prime is fast becoming a matter of historical record. The killing moon really did come too soon. 

Where will electronic music, DJ sets or any of this be in 2044? Hard to say. Best not to overthink that one. Instead, we want to say thanks to all contributors on the series so far. Now enjoy luxuriating in the company of two of the greatest to ever do it, together, for the first and last time.⁠
