This composition started with an email Deepak Gopalakrishnan (https://twitter.com/chuck_gopal) sent me 3 years ago with a noisy home recording of an intro riff to what he felt might make a good ambient/melodic metal song and he was kicked about collaborating to make one. 

Well, I kept him waiting for about 3 years, till this artwork by Blaft (https://twitter.com/blaftness/status/496147826695368704/photo/1) inspired me to make a doom metal arrangement of the sloka used to solemnize Hindu weddings. And Deepak's riff kicks it off

मान्गल्यम् तन्तुनानेन मम जीवन हेथुनां। 
Maangalyam Thanthunaanena mama jeevana hethunaam
कन्ठेः बध्नामि सुभगे संजीव शरदः शतम्॥
Kantehe badhnaami subhage sanjiva sharadashatham

"This is a sacred thread. This is essential for my long life. I tie this around your neck O maiden having many auspicious attributes. May you live happily for a hundred years(with me)."

Of course, all good intentions, except, most Indian weddings are arranged marriages where an unsuspecting girl is thrown into the forbidding depths of hell as her parents' life savings are wiped out to initiate a property transfer of her life, career and reproductive rights to the groom's family. 

The composition seeks to capture this impending sense of doom as she takes a blind step into this hall of nightmarish horrors that is known as the average Indian arranged marriage.

This takes my mom  back to  childhood in 70's, when the mellifluous voice of Amma floated down from the loudspeakers of the Venkateshwara temple at Vontikoppal,Mysore in the morning. It used to be so quiet in those days that the song could be heard a kilometer away ! Amma would sing this and Bhavaayami raghuramam and make us feel what Bhaktirasa was all about. Thank you amma, We﻿ miss you.
