Constitutional TRap

This composition started with an email Deepak Gopalakrishnan (https://twitter.com/chuck_gopal) sent me 3 years ago with a noisy home recording of an intro riff to what he felt might make a good ambient/melodic metal song and he was kicked about collaborating to make one. 

Well, I kept him waiting for about 3 years, till this artwork by Blaft (https://twitter.com/blaftness/status/496147826695368704/photo/1) inspired me to make a doom metal arrangement of the sloka used to solemnize Hindu weddings. And Deepak's riff kicks it off

मान्गल्यम् तन्तुनानेन मम जीवन हेथुनां। 
Maangalyam Thanthunaanena mama jeevana hethunaam
कन्ठेः बध्नामि सुभगे संजीव शरदः शतम्॥
Kantehe badhnaami subhage sanjiva sharadashatham

"This is a sacred thread. This is essential for my long life. I tie this around your neck O maiden having many auspicious attributes. May you live happily for a hundred years(with me)."

Of course, all good intentions, except, most Indian weddings are arranged marriages where an unsuspecting girl is thrown into the forbidding depths of hell as her parents' life savings are wiped out to initiate a property transfer of her life, career and reproductive rights to the groom's family. 

The composition seeks to capture this impending sense of doom as she takes a blind step into this hall of nightmarish horrors that is known as the average Indian arranged marriage.

Doom Mangalyam

Madurai Mani Iyer (Tamil: மதுரை மணி ஐயர்) (October 25, 1912 – June 8, 1968) was a Carnatic music singer, who was famous for his unique style. He was one of the most highly celebrated carnatic vocalists during the first half of the 20th century. He was renowned for his adept skills at singing kalpana swarams, neraval, and raga alapana. His music continues to be highly regarded today.
