Following up to their acclaimed "Hold" EP from last year, German duo Alma reemerge on Definition with their new transmission, "Mother". Through four cuts dropping anchor down the most remote nooks of our dance-friendly galaxy, Alma move the cursor from proper floor-focused 4x4 grooves to kosmische-informed pop excursions with dextrous style and seamless elegance. Crafting their own blend of emotionally whelming club music, it's material primed for extended use whether you are sitting on some high-rise, towering rooftops at sunrise or enjoying a freeze-dried cocktail on Alpha Centauri.    
Presented in both original version and remix form courtesy of label head Definition himself, title-track "Mother" is the epitome of a slo-burner, rolling at low speed but gaining tension, weight and impactfulness as it runs. Circuits sizzling and piano stabs blazing, Alma dish out a compelling sample of their cross-dimensional wares, sure to take any dancefloor in the zone without further ado. Definition’s Remix revamp trades the original’s steady swing for a further syncopated, newbeat-infected swagger, laying further emphasis on the synth leads and lashing drumwork as poetic, bleached-out pads keep painting the sky all shades of pastel. 
A more Italo-inflected affair at first, the tear-jerking "Lost In The Stars" has us gliding in a parallel universe of its own, where epic-sized synth combers and muscular bass onslaughts avalanche over brittle lines of soft-tongued vocals. As concretely submerging as it is designed to trigger off deep emotional response from the ravers, this one is tailored to weave instant communion between the jockey and his audience. Flinging in the breaks and cross-cutting delays, Kiel outfit Avidus shift the angle of approach towards harder, faster EBM firepower, binding their rowdy, FX-soaked chords with the chorus to create a wholly distinct dancing and listening experience.

Based in the States but signed to Night Slugs, Helix makes European music in an American way. Or is that the other way round? 

The US-Euro line is one that's been wheeled out before about Helix - he's even talked about his music in terms of Chicago legend Ron Hardy making grime - but it really is at the heart of what he does. He worships Detroit and Chicago - particularly the quick, raw mixing style of Jeff Mills and Derrick May, which is present in his FACT mix - but draws heavily from grime, to the point where he describes having Flirta D vocal his 'Drum Track' as "a fucking dream come true." And although his music could loosely be described as classic loop techno, it feels more in tune with current European sensibilities - particularly the Club Constructions axis - than most Stateside dance music.

Away from geography, what makes Helix's music work is the way he finds the subtleties in simplicity. Whether laying down loops of drum sounds and clipped chords ('Drum Track'; 'Stacks Riddim') or relentless techno (he described his recent Porsche Trax EP as DJ Vague as inspired by driving "fast in the dark – like hella fast"), he'll find exactly what makes a track work, and focus on it to the point where five channels and a simple 8 or 16-bar arrangement is all it needs. It's honestly uncanny.

The fourth track on Helix's FACT mix is listed as simply "horns & bass". Sometimes that's all you need, and no one proves it quite like this guy.

A mellow mid-tempo song - based on a strange, but driving, bass-heavy electronic beat, nasty synthlines and the absolute stunning voice of Lizzie Paige - the young American singer that performs all songs on the new Munk album along with London born vocalist Mona Lazette. 

The new single comes along with a great video by Milan based directors PROJ3CTSTUDIO. And remixes by PURPLE DISCO MACHINE (Exploited), new German producer genius LCAW and a country house version by Mr Munk himself.

Depending on when you met him and how, you either know him as a disco wizard, thanks to his productions under his own name, House of Spirits, or Lipton Whitaker; an excellent DJ who digs deep; the man behind Superior Elevation, his label and secondhand vinyl shop; an audiophile from Milwaukee; or all the above.

We recently had the pleasure of recording a show with Tom, which we now share with you today! At 2.5 hours, it's our longest one yet, which we certainly ain't mad about; the set will doubtlessly get you in a good mood or keep you there if you're already in one.
