Bill Converse resides in Austin Texas, by way of Detroit Michigan. Hardly a new kid on the block, Bill like many of us, simply has been doing what he loves to for years committing himself to his passion: producing music and djing. Quietly making a name for himself in his local scene he has built a bit of a cult following around him and is the go to dj in Texas when delving into the world of subversive electronics.

Having self released various tapes and maybe even an odd comp track here and there, Bill will see his debut release on the prolific and amazing Dark Entries in the coming months.

Undoubtedly Converse is one of the artists spearheading an ever expanding and extremely interesting scene which is spreading far and wide in the massive state of Texas. There will be alot more to hear from him in the future guaranteed.

Since the end of Sandwell District, Silent Servant has continued to be an influential presence in the techno world. The American’s Jealous God label defies convention and expectation with each release and his own avant guard productions remain utterly unique. Each one speaks to his roots—Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, The Cure—by fusing post punk and industrial with techno in chilling ways. His conceptual and sincere aesthetic carries over into his live sets, but also his DJ mixes. 

This latest one is special indeed: it is a mix of influences, in chronological order and “with only a few hiccups in dates” from 1972 to 2000 and all recorded on vinyl in one take. The resulting hour takes in plenty of those goth and alternative rock sounds, new wave, noise and experimental touchstones he grew up on in Los Angeles, but also seamlessly connects them to the techno that later influenced him so the likes of Kraftwerk, Neon, The Final Cut, Toddy Terry and Jeff Mills all make the cut. From stark and jerky rhythms early on to supple, strobe lit grooves in the second half, this is a personal mix that really tells the story of Silent Servant’s musical evolution.

The Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1

Six years ago, Russian-born Marina Rubinstein was a raver living in Tel Aviv with dreams of becoming a DJ. After saving up enough money, she bought a one-way ticket to Berlin, where she quickly worked her way up from playing small rooms to 20 people to playing the world's biggest techno club, Berghain.

Dr. Rubinstein's story is a familiar one, but her love of '90s acid techno and life-affirming rave tunes helped the fledgling DJ to stand out in a city then dominated by darker, more hypnotic sounds. Today, she's a globally respected selector with a joyous, life-affirming style.

This week's FACT mix is a snapshot of Dr. Rubinstein's dreamier side, packed with hazy breakbeat, electro and acid; it rarely climbs above 115BPM, with tracks from Lake Haze, Holger Flinsch and Legowelt amongst the tracks that will have spotters taking notes. It's one for the 7am crew.
