Well it’s been a long time coming but finally Critical label boss and all-round entertainer Kasra has put hand to mixing desk and delivered his first full 12” release on the imprint since it began back in 2002. Not only that but he’s done it with one of the most prolific and hot property names in the scene right now, Brazilian born S.P.Y. The result as you’d expect is pure D&B thunder! ‘Surface’ rolls out seriously from the off with a snapping two-step break accompanied by paranoid pads that drift throughout the mix as an unnerving vox drops us suddenly into this no-nonsense Friday night king of the rollers. Torpedo bass stabs rule as it marches along with full force to a deep, intense breakdown that signals the second drop into a more twisted incarnation of the b-line before. Dangerous, cavernous drum & bass from two people with their fingers firmly on the pulse. Moving on and ‘Control’ is a menace from the start with a drawn out intro that sets us up perfectly for the incoming onslaught. A heavily syncopated break leads the way much like a slice of classic Photek brought smack up to date for 2011, whilst undulating bass hits make sure this one never lets go, kicking and scrapping right to the very end. Brooklyn native, Doctor Jeep, aka Andre Lira is and has been, one of the most exciting and consistent producers to come up through the ranks of the underground bass music scene, to become one of the most influential and innovative artists to emerge in many years. His  discography impressively spans many respected labels and many different flavors. He eschews genre tags for substance, fusing familiar elements of grime, dubstep, house, and just about every imaginable in-between you could think of. His sound is distinctly his own, and unsurprisingly has found it’s way into many taste-maker’s sets, squarely placing him at the forefront of the new movement in bass music, that embraces past and present simultaneously and is unafraid to experiment with different tempos and sound palettes. Ultimately creating a unique, but cohesive, hybrid sound.

This EP sees Jeep dabble in a slightly higher (or perhaps lower depending on your math) bpm-range than what most people may be expecting. It leads off with the title track, “Dissociate”, which brings to mind images of one separating from one’s consciousness through the song’s hypnotic rhythms and soundscapes. Slowly building into a menacing, shambling monster of a tune, the bass-line snarls with the catchy hook layered on top. The GREAZUS flip takes the main theme of the original and dives into footwork territory, experimenting with different rhythms in the sub-bass, giving it an energetic, but minimal sensation sure to please late-night crowds.

TX, is next up, which lulls us into a false sense of ease, with a shimmering synth lead, then we are unexpectedly thrown into the Bear’s den when we hear the eerie vocal beckon. Bass-line madness and tight, steppy percussion ensue and give way to an infectious call & response hook that’s sure to get stuck in your head. Levrige take the reigns on remix duty of TX and give us a scorching jungle-laced stepper, that reminds us of the golden-era. Sweat-drenched, warehouse rave vibes, that tie-in the original concept, but distort the lens to fucked
up perfection. Subcorr holds down anchor with his ReRemix, coming in at a cloying 120 bpm. A stepping, but broken house beat, meets a fat 808 sub and sly chords to create a cloak-and-dagger vibe, while the subtle, but meaningful breakbeat edits provide context. This EP has something for bass lovers of all stripes.

Will & Ink’s latest is a remix EP that finds Bambounou and Simo Cell team up for four reworked versions of Yaleesa Halls Woodall LP. Bambounou is a Paris-based hybrid techno and house producer who has long been close to the 50 Weapons label, and Simo Cell is an experimental artist whose music finds a home on labels like Livity Sound and Wisdom Teeth. 

Up first, Bambounou goes in and turns ‘Woodall 0217’ into a menacing, stripped back track with a soft flurry of toms and freaky sine waves all underpinned by lurching, subliminal bass. Simo Cell then steps up for a version of '0224' that is much more dubbed out and for the club. It breezes along on a swaying groove with hi fidelity sound designs colouring the airwaves as the drums scurry down low. Then the pair link up for their Trance-Attitude-Mix of 'Woodall 0406'. Again the drums are weightless down below as they turn in big, sweeping loops and the slivers of silvery synth really electrify the whole thing as they flash about like fireflies. Finally, they remix the same track again but remove the drums, instead making it a paranoid and dark, spares and suggestive minimal number that is wholly from the future. These two have a very specific sound and one that sounds like little else, a solid match with Yaleesa Hall and the Will & Ink imprint, as this EP proves.

@DrJeep makes his triumphant return to Aufect after his previous outing last Summer, that made the title cut “Dissociate” an anthem heard at festivals across the globe. He has gone from strength to strength and continued to release his music on a diverse selection of labels like Tuba, Tumble Audio & Enchufada. Our boy Andre proves that his reputation for producing infectious ear worms is not unfounded and he has provided these completely unique, yet at the same time, familiar tunes. They live up to the hype of last year’s release and build upon Jeep’s already immense stature.

This EP is comprised of three original Jeep MD tunes, plus two superb remixes courtesy of our pals Fixate and DJ Madd, whom need no introduction. The whole package beckons to be played at festivals and we’re already delighted with the responses we’ve seen so far. There is absolutely zero fucking around on this EP.

“Jawbreaker” gets things rolling with it’s hypnotic drums, which drop into portamento synth riffs bobbing and weaving themselves into the rhythms. Every sound used sparingly and to great effect. “B.C. Mosh” builds with an ominous flute riff that gives way to a catchy saw bass hook, that beckons to its forlorn partner and they have some brilliant moments calling and responding to one another. “Laff Trak” takes layers of sparse percussion and layers an atonal mid-bassline with a warm, low frequency sine wave. Constantly morphing as the low frequencies are filtered in unexpected and clever ways. Fixate’s understated but fierce re-imagining of “Laff Trak” bring us back to a dingy warehouse in 2009, where we’d expect to see Skream or Coki dropping Dubstep classics. However it seems he forgot the sequencer on 170 bpm instead of 140 and we’re treated to something that sounds equally classic and weighty, while deceptively simple. DJ Madd brings the heat on the final remix of “Jawbreaker”. Heavy 808 subs pulse, while a trademark DJ Madd hook skitters around your ears. Layers of programmed breakbeats keep the energy high and bring the release to a satisfying conclusion.
