As you may probably know, we have a sister digital label called Aine, where we release mainly the work of new talents of the scene. Now it’s time to step forward and give them physical exposure, of course on wax.

For this purpose we have selected four tracks from Aine’s back catalogue to start this   mini compilation series. The chosen are Ribé, Oisel, Refracted and Ruptur3. Three spanish producers and an italian one.

First cut Atop relies on heavy subbbass action and modular workout, continuous synth lines, micro drones and a circular arrangement make this one a proper mover.

Erosione follows, heavily Jeff Mills influenced, Fm bell like sequences, multiple percussive layers and rolling bass frequencies to move any intelligent dancefloor out there.

The Drums, is not a drum track paradoxically, based on synthetic lines, textures and drones it’s the ideal warm up cut, mental, slow and deep.

28064212 is a shuffled exercise, based on a triplet rhythm, robot like cadencies and groove, like an industrial soundtrack of a decadent future.

A compilation that shows the power of newcomers and opens a promising future for our scene.

Our mix series returns March 15, 2019 with the 9th edition mixed and compiled by Vatican Shadow. It includes 13 exclusive tracks available for download or on 2x12“ vinyl  [O-TON 119].

Since becoming a Berghain resident in 2017, Dominick Fernow’s risk-taking hybrid live/DJ sets as Vatican Shadow have become conduits for infusing techno with contrasting musical ideas – from noise, industrial and ambient to distorted melodies and rhythms that push the club’s borders in unexpected ways.

It’s an idiosyncratic approach to techno rooted not only in Fernow’s 25-plus years as an experimental and noise musician under more than a dozen aliases (e.g. Prurient, Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement) but also in his role as founder of the vital New York-based Hospital Productions, whose discography exceeds some 500 releases. The label – which in 2017 celebrated its 20-year anniversary – is also home to the majority of Vatican Shadow output to date.

Under that alias, Fernow’s numerous albums and 12”s (including 2017’s ‘Rubbish Of The Floodwaters’ on Ostgut Ton) oscillate between ominous, distorted machine-funk, techno and ambient electronics; equal parts noise, melody and rhythm. Since 2011, the project’s intentionally ambiguous visual identity has been defined by War on Terror-related imagery and track titles – and the media’s role therein.

Both the ‘Berghain 09’ mix and accompanying exclusive 12”s – featuring exclusive tracks by Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Virile Games, Los Angeles Death Cult, Ron Morelli, Volvox, JK Flesh, Alberich, Ugandan Methods | Prurient and Merzbow – reflect Vatican Shadow’s composite musical influences and relationship to Berghain as a club. Stylistically, the two vinyls are divided between clubbier and experimental electronics, with vocal samples of Genesis Breyer P-Orridge acting as a bridge between the two. All tracks on Side D end in locked grooves.

As Fernow describes in his own words:

“My interest in DJing developed naturally out of industrial music traditions such as mail art, tape trading, and sound collage. While this mix, of course, does not solely focus on cassettes, they were used as the bridge between the seemingly disparate areas and cross-sections of underground electronic edits you will find sewn together from diverse factions to create a sonic ‘cut up’. Accordingly, the artists featured with exclusive tracks span several continents and generations of electronic music subculture, from the birth of industrial in the UK and the rhythmic loops of Japanese noise, to the raw collision of genres found in the NYC underground. ‘Berghain 09’ is a tribute to the techno mixtapes that influenced me during my introduction to raves and dance music in the 90s.”

This chapter included a original track of the label's owner Victor Martinez (Error Etica) and 3 special remixes by the Japan techno artist Hironori Takahashi (Informa-Granulart-Stroboscopic Artefacts) and Pelacha owner of Redsonja Records and founder of Stelar Booking and the famous parties in Madrid Techno Cracks ,
As a special mention the masterful reinterpretation of English techno legend Nick Dunton /65D Mavericks (Surface Records / Inceptive / Poverty is Violence/Blueprint) of the original track: Schematic Diagram thats included only in digital live version that Victor interpreted in mythical club in Barcelona "Moog"

The second Section Roots is a most honourable follow up to the first brilliant title in this series. The original Error Etica production here is another masterpiece of inspired sound design that can only do the best kind of damage on the dancefloor. The Hironori Takahashi brings some heavy drone logic to his remix proceedings and invevitably, 65D Mavericks turns in a remarkable, techno as techno can be remix with amazing exploratory harmonic design in the vein of productions from recent releases. Pelacha lays down some very mixable stripped back, grooved based action and the live version of Schematic Diagram is an absorbing trip through a subterranean techno cave system

You never really know how it can sound when the feelings and the reality of the everyday life starts shaping the pulse and the characters of a track, before even dropping a kickdrum or a bass in the mix. The composition of the elements making Atomos Ep, by spanish artist Korben Nice, is filled and configured to bring the listener between the velocity of techno and the several rhythmical steps of the playing parts. Korben Nice indeed reveals the effect of life and its constant instability and changes and how it affects the process of creation.

The first track, Atom, kicks off the journey with hypnotic sounds that sets the ground for a deep and dark voice, fading and letting the space again for more percussive sounds. It introduces the unit that will then serve as the building matter. The second track, Isotope, gives no relief to the listener, ringing anguishing bells and contrasting with the tribal sounds and uplifting pads. The sound contradiction is at the center of the track and will perfectly serve the dancefloor. Light then comes in with Atomos third track, Circonio, and announces the pounding techno machinery. Still, ray of nostalgia and melancholia can be felt piercing the systemic wheelwork, leaving the listener changed without even noticing.

The three original compositions are packed with a brilliant remix of the track Atom by techno artist Eric Fetcher which emphasizes in a really personal way the global ambiance of Atomos.
