Following up to his debut mini-album “Antennen” issued last year on Noorden, fellow Cologne-based producer Panta Rex returns to the label with “Lefty”, his sophomore three-track delivery which finds him scoping out the confines between photophobic modular techno, subsheavy traction and AI-operated melodicism. 

True to the intricate engineering of his first compositions, Panta Rex expands his sonic logos to even broader horizons of -altered- functionality. Most definitely a piece of club-oriented abstr-activism though offering vaster sequences and audio expanses to perambulate your mind within, “Lefty” is a mille-feuille of textural ambiguities, secret rooms and corridors – piecing together galloping dynamics with bleepy opaqueness as it leaves your mind out of focus all the way through to a steely, slo-burning yet highly choreographic finale. 

Veering off to a more aqueous, dubby state of mind, B1 “Swerve” draws the loud, muffled kicks and FX-drenched synth stabs for a much immersive ride in the deep, shrouded in organic envelopes and overlapping layers of intriguing sonic minutiae. Closing cut “Dizz” wraps it up on a more breaksy note with its contrasted ballet of wistful strings, sliced-and-diced drumwork and dissonant chimes opening us to a heightened, 90s-informed apex of sorts, where Panta Rex’s subtle touch and widescreen vision bloom all the more unreservedly.

[NooLtd37] Orion Moustache – EP02/Remixes

@orion-moustache on his »EP03«:

»For EP03 I introduced a sampler (Elektron Octatrack) to the setup and this changed the compositional possibilities vastly. As in ›EP02‹ (https://soundcloud.com/noorden/sets/nooxcviii) I only used a guitar as sound source but with the sampler I was able to modulate and process sound more thoroughly. From the Octatrack I recorded directly into a four track cassette recorder.

The first track ›It‹ is using an auto-riff effect that is actually meant for playing metal style arpeggios at an impossible speed. I slowed it down and wrapped it in reverb and the result was a floating synth like sound. Throughout the track a melodic line builds up that is eventually drowned in a drone that might mark either an ending or a beginning — or both.

Slowly building up from a static background noise and panning movements a strange soundscape emerges in the second track ›Is‹ (this track had the working title ›Saturn Birds‹ – you will get the idea when listening…). The somewhat fluttery panned sounds are anchored with a slow and deep bass that brings a warm feel to the track. 

Track three, four and five (›Not‹, ›That‹, and ›Simple‹) all stem from the same source material that was sampled with the Octatrack. Even though many of the building blocks are the same, the character of each track is different. ›Not‹ creates a dark but calm atmosphere centered around a melodic element that builds up slowly (somewhat similar to the first track of the EP). ›That‹ starts with this same element but has a more positive vibe created by the accompanying sounds. ›simple‹ has a rather destructive atmosphere when it starts with heavily crushed, reversed and slowed down sounds but eventually it moves to the earlier mentioned melodic element that creates a contrast in the middle of the track – only to move back to the nebula from the beginning.«

To leave a durable sonic footprint, one that matters, one that after ten years of cohesive activism in the field of so-called ‘dance music’ would make the voyage and vehicle worth the body and soul breathed into it. A gratifyingly sustainable vision for the club and not, enjoining the picky home-listener and basement insurgent to unite over reels of finespun electronics, minutely put together to weave the most immersive of experiences.

Since its inception in October 2011, Noorden has aimed at crafting time-proof pieces of sound, easing its audience in a continuously shape-shifting vortex of abstract-leaning programmings and genre-unbound grooves, faux-organic folds and barrages of borderline seditious versatility. Iconoclastic by nature, the label celebrates its tenth anniversary with this eleven-track Compilation, gathering a cast of close friends and collaborators who have all made their contribution in the rise and development of Noorden as an idiosyncratic musical vessel.

Spanning all styles electronic, from techno to ambient music, via all kinds of off-piste oddities, house-y, kosmische, spacious or claustrophobic, epic-sized and intimate, “NOO11—21” captures a widescreen snapshot of the label’s immediate reality, and exhibits its role as a bold-minded hub for like-minded artists, each of whom have been cutting their own path of differentiation in a world increasingly drawn towards uniformity and obedience to the standard in force.

With a slightly melodramatic tone, 'Mother Earth Took Poison In Her Soil' sets a pressing call to Side A, while 'Interlude 1' is a short radiophonic story to engage with your own imagination. This blends into a warm and melodic 'Dancing Patterns', embedded in soft pads. 'Haze' presents a darker facet of this EP, using eery synth pads and tension inducing fast arpeggi. 'Interlude 2' literally tells a sonic fireside tale, before 'Unattainable Promises' accelerate their breakbeats, intertwining with lush pads on half-step passages and sonic layers of different tempi.

It’s a commonplace that a lot of experimental music is located at the border between music and noise. The distinction between the two concepts resides as much within the structure of a given piece as in the ear of the listener. To put it differently, whether one hears music or noise is to some extent defined by who is listening rather than what is being listened to. Go to any experimental music performance and you will see some audience members with their eyes closed in a gesture of reverence, listening intently to the music; others will be nervously shifting and sneaking glimpses at their phones, waiting for the noise to stop. 

It is a common sight at festivals like Meakusma, whose 2019 edition N. Cyril Fischer attended for zweikommasieben. This observation leads to rather basic questions: What should immersive listening focus on and when should it stop? There is no way to be certain that all that is left to hear is noise, when only the very act of listening itself may reveal the meaning. Being short of an answer to these questions may lead to an insignificant statement like “everything can be music.” To maybe find some sort of answer, Fisher made extensive field recordings over the three days of the festival and a previous one-day visit to festival site in Eupen two months earlier, which he later worked into an audio-track. There still is obviously a great deal of music to be heard on there, but it has always been recorded indirectly, either from a distance, through a wall, from behind a closed door, from among the feet of a crowd, behind a sound system, and so on. The border between the music and the rest is therefore not even clear to begin with, leaving more space for the reflection of the questions posed before.
