The Sydney-based DJ and producer Ryan O'Rourke aka Obelisk (he/him) is an emerging name in the Australian contemporary underground club scene as an organizer of the experimental dance event series Nexus (instagram.com/nexus.eora/) and as an artist, holding releases on local compilations (@deep-scan-radio and @meganesia), and showcasing performances as both a solo artist and with the Winged Mantis duo, alongside Sydney-based DJ @index-exe. The work of Obelisk focuses on the interaction between heavy laptop electronic music and jungle/breakcore influences, mediated by a taste for raw aggressiveness and emotional grandeur that have been arranged in his debut release “Meta Bliss”, out on December 28th on our platform.

Composed of three original tracks, the release collects sharp, crystalline, and bursting compositions that feature fast and broken rhythms brilliantly juxtaposed with disfigured synths. While often indulging in the belligerent fury of knife-sharp percussions and booming distortion, the EP often crosses into spacious, euphoric melodies accompanied by frantic but cathartic, tempo-shifting drum work. Obelisk’s goal has been to investigate various ways of experiencing ecstasy and euphoria, whether by means of extreme, overwhelming rhythmic aggression, or breathtaking melodic refrains. While going through the 20-minute EP, one is brought to witness a daring descent into rush. “Meta Bliss” is the heavily cinematic sound commentary to some fast-paced, epic-scale, high fantasy encounter with angel-shaped, all-powerful beings of light under an immaculate sky.

Meta Bliss EP is completed by two remixes by the Sydney-based musician, producer, and DJ Ptwiggs (she/her) @ptwiggs and the Perth-based producer and DJ SUS1ER (he/him) @sus1er. Ptwiggs provides additional tones of darkness to “Illidan Bass” by crafting a 170 BPM deep drum and bass rework rich with clangy breakbeats, and diving deep into the obscurity of the industrial bassline. On the other hand, SUS1ER delivers the perfect closure to the release by re-arranging the opening track “Echoburst” into a 178 BPM hardcore anthem that preserves the emotional impact of the original all the way through the rawstyle finale.

sorbitol drops alias Antonín Závodný is Chrudim (Czech rep.) born, Prague based multidisciplinary artist, curator and a steampower of the establishing Trať festival. With an ear for crispy refined sound design as well as a sense for substantial and dynamic sonic world-building, he proves to be a newfound talent within the Czech experimental music scene – the kind that doesn’t appear every year. After being aware of each other long before he'd start making music, Gin&Platonic are now tickled to introduce sorbitol drops with his ambitious premiere project 'Remízek Music'.

Produced with the spatiality of a six-channel audio instalation in mind, Závodný guides us on an excursion into the haven of his resourceful sound palette, portraying a vibrant place existing almost comically on it’s own. The term 'remízek' is used to describe a special type of grove – an unnaturally planted assemblage of a so-called forest, almost ironically dragged-and-dropped to exist surrounded by any kind of agricultural landscape. When entering such a grove from an open field, there is no gradual transformation from one biocenosis to another, creating a situation where a radical switch between two completely different worlds is just a few footsteps away.
While traversing this cute but absurd tableau of the audible forrest oasis, stripped down of it’s original sprawl, we promptly find ourselves under a pressure of a constant neurotic crackle, harrowing creaky moaning, all participating in recurrent ambiguous breakdowns. Naive melodies buzz out from echoes of the interactions of temporary inhabitants of the environment, revealing their habits and territorial contradictions. At times, these melodies merge into a playful conversation of camaraderie; at other times, they spiral into wordless-but-loud dramas and overall tensions of sharing a limited space in which they must coexist. Utilizing sounds of materials found in this harbor combined with highly processed samples, the result is a convincing fusion of narrative composition shaping up in a expressive bricolage full of harmless tension and lively contrast.

sorbitol drops - Edgy Ecotone

The 45th release of katharsis is the EP "Intrusion" by Italian artist Lefka, releasing in full on October 28th. Throughout the six tracks of the EP, Lefka swaddles the listener in a dense and distorted quilt of sound that feels both heavy and light at the same time. "Intrusion" is a release that aims to sonify the acceptance of intrusive thoughts through a kathartic and emotionally intense experience.

Through heavy use of granular synthesis and electric guitar recordings, the release varies from calm, introspective moments to peaks of intense sound pressure. Like through glass, the sounds refract and are broken into pieces, creating an aural effect of rebound and confused scattering, and like intrusive thoughts, the tracks have abrupt peaks that reset the silence with unsettling intensity.

Lefka is a multidisciplinary artist based in Amsterdam. As in a stream of consciousness, his own productions are characterized by an irreverent and disillusioned approach, which aim to detach from a precise genre-categorization.

The final katharsis release of 2024 is the 26-track compilation “Physical Force” featuring a wide range of affiliated artists from both the international and local Copenhagen electronic music scene. As the title hints, Physical Force delves into the visceral, bodily aspects of music, inviting its contributors to explore the theme of movement as a central element in their compositions. Each artist was encouraged to focus on rhythm, groove, energy, and the physicality of sound, which resulted in drum-heavy release from start to finish. While there is a consistent emphasis on rhythm and a bodily connection to the music, the tracks vary widely in style and sonic texture, ranging from big melodic anthems, gritty experimental techno, heavy jungle bangers, and beyond.
