Rio de Janeiro-based label, Onda Boa, embarks on a sonic journey to Brazil’s North East for inspiration with their fourth release, "Faraó Divindade do Egito." Joutro Mundo reinterprets one of Brazil’s earliest samba-reggae tunes — a track that achieved the feat of selling over a hundred thousand copies upon its initial release, marking a significant milestone for Bahian music — while remaining faithful to the label’s "cosmitropical" sound that defined Onda Boa’s initial three releases.

Originally recorded by axé legend (and current Brazilian Minister of Culture) Margareth Menezes, "Faraó Divindade do Egito" swiftly became a Bahian carnival anthem upon its debut in 1987. Joutro Mundo transforms this classic into a deep cosmic journey that still remains rooted in the song's axé origins. The vocals, delivered enchantingly by Faustão, a prominent vocalist from Salvador, sing of the profound connection between ancient Egypt and the sun-soaked cobblestone streets of Pelourinho, Salvador Bahia's historic district with deep African roots. This lovingly crafted update will resonate just as powerfully on late-night dancefloors as it will at some Balearic beach bar off the coast of Salvador.

Keeping the project authentically Bahian, Onda Boa wisely enlists the talents of Bahia Boogie and Mareh Music mainstay, Processman, for the remix. The seasoned producer, hailing from the same region as Margareth Menezes, provides an authentic connection from the origins of axé music to contemporary Afro-Brazilian electronic beats. His remix transforms the track into a mid-tempo axé house track that pays homage to the original's spirit. Alongside the traditional timbres found in axé music, the familiar melody of the song unfolds via an analog synth line that gradually evolves into more acidic territory as the track progresses.

Undoubtedly, this is celebratory music set to elevate the dancefloor with its cosmic carnival vibe. And, regardless of whether you speak Portuguese, this is a musical journey that connects you to something deeper. This is Brazilian future roots dance music — an auditory offering fit for a Pharaoh.

Released in 1983 as part of the "Dádiva" album, "Rio Babilônia" is not as famous as the "Taj Mahal / Filho Maravilha / Pais Tropical" song, which was the highlight of this LP. 
It is nevertheless a joyful love message written byJorge Ben to his incredible hometown. Here is my drummed up edit of it.
