Available April 14th 2014 - Run Tingz Digital tear a hole into the new season with their first release of 2014. Living up to its name in every way, ‘Road Block’ is a party-packed skanker that’s set to become a summer anthem. 

It comes courtesy of the label’s very own J.Man. Signed exclusively in 2013, his agenda-setting remixes of undisputed Run Tingz classics –  ‘Rock A Dub’, ‘Junglist Ting and ‘Jungle Champion’ – have each scored prime position in the most discerning Drum & Bass Jungle selections. 

His debut original project with the label, ‘Road Block’ will build on his already impressive profile: complete with his signature Jungle drumming and instantly recognisable horn riffs (taken from The Aggravators ‘Rockers Almighty’) it’s the perfect complement to the impeccable lyrical talent of Doncaster’s most demonstrative vocalist Parly B. Currently enjoying support and props from the UK’s leading reggae ambassador David Rodigan, Parly’s emphatic sermons ensure instant explosions in the dance. Warm, melodic and wholly compatible with J.Man’s heavyweight groove, Parly’s vocals and J.Man’s sunshine sonics are a match made in Jungle heaven. 

It’s a road block on the remix front too. Straight out of their Bristol HQ, Run Tingz have invited exciting new West Country duo TerraHawk to the fray. Fresh from remixing Blak Twang’s ‘Rebel MC’ the duo have unleashed a firing jam that spits and sizzles with contemporary Drum & Bass fire. All rifling breakbeats, immense bass pressure and a drop sharp enough to shave, TerraHawk confirm their place as one of the most exciting new D&B acts to emerge in the last year. 

In an exciting new development for the label, the release offers added soundsystem gravitas in the form of Sleepy Time Ghost’s Reggae and Bass Music infusions. Bulbous bass bubbles and a smouldering kick-and-skank groove, Sleepy’s blessed the original with an array of deep space and authentic Jamaican promise. In 2015, Brain Damage presented the album « Walk The Walk » — seen now by many as a centerpiece of his discography —, featuring 10 original songs, composed in collaboration with the legendary Horace Andy, Willi Williams, Winston Mc Anuff, Ras Michael and Kiddus I, that he met in Kingston, Jamaica, at mythical Harry J Studio. One year later, we therefore welcome the release of « Talk The Talk », gathering the dub versions of these tracks.

To highlight each of them, the producer chose to have them vocally introduced, as it used to be good form to back in the days, calling on another legend in the person of Father Wee Pow, founder of the major Jamaican sound-system Stone Love, that call all the shots on the Island since … 1972 … Each dub version then develops with lots of echoes, Singers Talk The Talkreverberations, surprises, fake accidents and true mastery through sound texture manipulation, sometimes bruitist, juxtaposed with Elders’ firing choruses, appearing here and there as references to the original versions. Also of note is that each track systematically concluded by vocal interventions in the form of the singers’ interview extracts, taken from talks that were conducted following the studio sessions at Harry J Studio, one year earlier, thanks to the complicity of the two producers, Sam Clayton Jr and Stephen Stewart, without whom, none of this would have been possible.

Ironically, if Brain Damage is acclaimed for many years as one of the leading activists of the French and international dub scene, « Talk The Talk » feels like his first proper dub album. May it sound like an exercise in style, it is mainly a cornerstone within a wider project, complemented by another essential part to its understanding, this time in the form of a documentary.

Joined during his Jamaican journey by the director Wasaru, it seems obvious to Brain Damage that what they got here with « Walk The Walk » extends way beyond the artistic realm: listening to these living legends telling about their childhood memories has indeed a true heritage significance. Between a photograph of Jamaican life of the 60s & 70s, anecdotes about mythical figures and historic milestones of the Island, and personal confidences, these are as many stories within the history, narrated in this 8 episode documentary series.
The phrase “talk the talk, walk the walk” meaning “backing up one’s rhetoric with deeds”, perfectly reflects this project as a whole, as each of its dimensions has be considered, and intellectualized, before its very completion.


► FATHER WEE POW from the mighty Stone Love

Winston « Wee Pow » Powell founded Stone Love sound system in 1972. Soon well known for its sound quality, it quickly becomes one of the most popular in Jamaica. Still active nowadays, it is a true institution in itself, and by extension, a trend indicator whose influences regularly spread throughout the world, like each musical movement that developed in Jamaica for many years. One of the longevity secrets of Wee Pow’s project seems to stem from his excellence in the art of bringing together around himself, the very cream of the crop of Djs and selecters of the Island, bringing a fresh and young perspective necessary to constantly reinvent itself.

After the first successful release which featured Echo Ranks, dub duo Dubble returns with their next 10"@Dub Tunnel records. This time they did a collaboration with legendary vocalist Molara widely known as  Zion Train's lead singer for many years. Currently along her solo project she's  actively singing with Powersteppers and with legendary punk reggae outfits Ruts DC. She has also sung live or recorded with: The Knights of the Occasional Table, Femi Kuti, Loop Guru, Neil Sparkes and The Last Tribe,  Soul Captain Band, Maggie Nicols, Zubop Gambia, Baka Beyond, One Voice Choir and Mad Professor . 
Featured track is entitled "Crown of Creation". It's been written by Colin Powerstepper on Dubble riddim and sang by Molara and of course its followed by proper dub version! 
Side B features dubble's ruff dub called "south side dub" and its meditative melodica cut.

Vibration Lab is a production/dj duo/record label and events group based in London who create and promote: Future Digital Reggae. Vibration Lab have been associated with Dubby "Reggae influenced" Bass music but they have recently done two remixes pressed to vinyl:  Blend Mishkin & Roots Evolution Feat. Skarra Mucci & Mandinka Warrior ?– Original (Vibration Lab Remix) on Nice-Up Records NPU028 7" and Sound Transmission Records-12"-Empress / Solo Banton Feat. Sabrina Bell + Gallang / Parly B - Vibration Lab Remix) which signal a shift to a more "Digital" Reggae sound. 

For their next project they have assembled a "super group" formed out of the "live" sessions on the Reggae Roast Soundsystem. At these dances the pair would select in a throw-back 80's style,in the fashion of "old-school"sounds like Youth Promotion in Jamaica, with teams of singers and mc's. Along with help of Reggae soundsystem veterans: Brother Culture, Colourman, Donovan Kingjay and Dark Angel the pair went into the studio to re-create the energy and excitement of these dances and thus: Vibration Lab & The Digital Messiahs was born. The first single from this project will come out on the Vibration Lab label and is called: (Digital Messiahs Theme) feat:Brother Culture, Colourman, Donovan Kingjay and Dark Angel. A full album of the project will be released this year!

Vibration Lab is also working with up and coming MC/Singer Natty Campbell on some new material to come out on the Vibration LabLabel, first release is called: Tell It To Dem on the Utica Riddim, which will be ot soon!
