Connecting distinctive characters in order to act creatively and cohesively could be a challenge in any artistic area. It demands the type of trust that nurtures complicity and the type of coordination that depends on a lot of factors, the main one being intimacy. But music has this power of synchronization that can be hardly achieved through any other form of expression and is the main reason why and how this collective can do what they do in such a unique manner. The quartet and label known as Bongosynth takes full advantage of this harmonic quality that rhythms and melodies have of putting us in consonance whenever we play or enjoy any musical artifact. And this mix gives delightful evidence of what makes the curatorial capacity of this ensemble something so special as they take us through two intense hours of relentless groove-weaving across a spectacularly diverse soundscape.

Gop Cast 081 - Bongosynth

Born 1970 near Stuttgart, Germany. Started mixing and collecting records in 1985. After competing in various DJ battles (such as the DMC German Championships 1991) he had his first residency in a club in Stuttgart in 1991. During the 90's he was mostly known as a Hip Hop DJ/producer and as a member of chart topping Hip Hop band Freundeskreis. With Freundeskreis he released 2 gold selling studio albums, 1 live album and a best of album (FK 10 in 2007). Since 2000 he released 4 solo albums, made countless Remixes (The Jackson 5, Das EFX, The Pharcyde, Die Fantastischen Vier, Malente just to name a few) and his newer projects include Motor Mouth with Philip König and Bodymovin with DJ Thomilla and the Boogie/Funk project Ground Control. Nowadays he's mostly into Modern Funk, House, Electro- + Discofunk. As a kid growing up in the 70s and 80s his influences are Discofunk, Electrofunk, Boogie, Soul, Italo Disco, Hip Hop and House.

Lumberjacks Tapes 050: DJ Friction

Today's premiere from rising duo BOREAL SUN is a must hear for fans of contempory jazz, soul and West African rhythms. 

A collaboration between vocalist Liselotte Östblom (Sput, Ghost-Note) and producer/multi-instrumentalist Matt Roberts (Cleo Sol, Jorja Smith), BOREAL SUN are set to release their highly anticipated second single ‘New Beginning’ via Bridge The Gap on Thursday 7th March. Another taster of forthcoming debut EP ‘Dawn’, it follows the success of "future jazz & broken beat" tinged "< html > Code", which premiered on BBC Radio 6 before finding support across the likes of Jazz FM, Rinse FM and NTS.

"New Beginning" sees the duo channel West African influences into a utopian tale of endless possibilities and opportunities to flourish. The optimistic lyrical tone is mirrored by uplifting melodies, the dancing flute of Gareth Lockrane, impressive, flowing horn arrangements and the driving percussion of djembe master Yahael Camara Onono (Balimaya Project).

*How would you describe your sound?*

It’s funk, disco and house. Percussion is one of the most essential elements in our music! But I also would describe it as summery with the goal that people feel good and want to dance. 

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?*

We are inspired by so many music and artists. You can hear that in the diversity of our tracks. We are inspired by African music, jazz but also funk, disco and house classics.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

The mix shows the different approaches of our productions we did so far. From live band sound and originals, to remixes and edits.

Monologues

M80: Alma Negra

Jesse Dayton was born and raised on the Texas Louisiana border town of Beaumont Texas. He started his career out as a country/rock/blues guitarist recording with Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Ray Price and many other country legends. He also wrote original soundtrack songs for Rob Zombie films "The Devils Rejects" appeared in  

"Halloween 2" as Capt Clegg and wrote/directed his own zombie B movie "Zombex" starring Malcolm McDowell & Sid Haig. Later he played guitar & helped arrange the Supersuckers "Must've Been High" country record, tour as the guitarist for LA punk legends X w/ John Doe, Exene & DJ Bonebrake & tour extensively w/ Mike Ness from Social Distortion. After writing the critically acclaimed novel "Beaumonster" on Hachette Book Group in 22", Dayton went on to write and record a duets record w/ blues sensation Samantha Fish which was nominated for a Grammy in 2023. Dayton lives in Austin Texas and releases his new solo record "The Hard Way Blues" May 31, 2024.
