§ The need or desire for ornament and decoration in our lives appears to be a universal one - an aspect of the human condition which cam be found in the caves of pre-historic man, in the pyramids and tombs of Ancient Egypt, in the temples of Greece, through Etruscan times, the Middle-Ages, the geometric ornament of Islam, and in the patterned wallpapers and textiles of today. Before the development of printing, styles and methods of decoration were based on a progressive accumulation of traditions, religious influences, technical advances - as well as the availability of materials, the exigencies of climate, the wealth and stability of societies, and the whims and ambitions of individual men, whether tyrants or artists. 

§ Cobogó is the name of the hollow elements, originally made of concrete or ceramic, created in the 20th Century. Its name derives from the initials of the surnames of three engineers that worked in Recife, Brazil: Amadeu Oliveira Coimbra, Ernest August Boeckmann and Antônio de Góes. These elements follow the same principle of the old wooden elements of Moorish architecture: solution to the closure of structures.

"[...] The use of trusses in wood (shutters, arupemas, Mashrabiyas), gives a sense of protection from the direct openings to the sun, especially in the houses facing west. Hence, a living proof of an appropriate cultural transposition. That was a specific function and exemplarily detailed – That the Sun can be controlled, attenuated and tamed. Ventilation can enter, escape, go across and lessen. We Won! It is possible to live in the tropics!".
