An experiment with additive synthesis and a quarter of 666Hz.

Originally written as part of a challenge in the Csound community in 2007 to use a single simple instrument compensating with over 6200 notes in 283 seconds.

A Nother Quarter

This is a small experiment in "what hapens if..."  I wanted to explore some styles on minimalism and it sort of developed. It is a remix of a well-known hymn melody which I happened to have on my disk in digital form.   I have only heard it on small laptop speakers so am not sure if it sounds right, but thought  would seek comments.

Written  via a C program to drive a simple orchestra in Csound, April 2014. Clues are in the title

"Diz-se que o caminho do Peabiru começava em São Vicente e terminava
além dos Andes. Grande estrada pré-colombiana, é também ligada à lenda
de Pai Sumé, uma figura semissagrada dos Tupis e Guaranis que viviam no
sudeste brasileiro. A minha música é uma homenagem a esse povo que foi
indiscretamente empurrado para fora da sua terra, mas que continua a viver
em topônimos como este, e também em nossa própria língua, no dialeto
caipira."

08 Peabirú (CD Duo Clavis)

A 3-voice textural composition made with the Hadron Particle Synthesizer (Csound/MaxForLive). I've attempted to do some gestural counterpoint between the three different voices. The basic material was improvised live using a midi controller to play the Hadron, three such improvised takes were made. This basic material was then juxtaposed and edited. This was done in an iterative work process, where I would listen to the whole piece and take notes, then do editing, then listen to the whole piece again.
I plan to do a final mix in PT, also trying out some other reverbs.

Mark (aka Mystahr) at the Justnotnormal Netlabel has just released their second massive compilation, no-R-mal II, 71 tracks of experimental music organized into six sets (each of which is suitable for burning to a CD). Each CD has a theme; the first one is called Warm voices, and it includes a track of mine called Penumbral.

Penumbral started life several years ago as a piece called Passacagla & Fugue State and uses a “scale” I built from the set of pitches used in the La Monte Young sine wave installation called (deep breath) “The Base 9:7:4 Symmetry in Prime Time When Centered above and below The Lowest Term Primes in The Range 288 to 224 with The Addition of 279 and 261 in Which The Half of The Symmetric Division Mapped above and Including 288 Consists of The Powers of 2 Multiplied by The Primes within The Ranges of 144 to 128, 72 to 64 and 36 to 32 Which Are Symmetrical to Those Primes in Lowest Terms in The Half of The Symmetric Division Mapped below and Including 224 within The Ranges 126 to 112, 63 to 56 and 31.5 to 28 with The Addition of 119”. This is a revision of my earlier piece, with (hopefully) higher-quality sound and several other changes here and there.

The piece was not intended to imitate natural sounds, but it did result in some sounds that are somewhat reminiscent of the peepers and insects that can be heard in rural places. Listening to it this morning, it blended very well with the cricket sounds coming through the open windows of my living room.

Penumbral (from "no-R-mal II", 2010)

“The Living Ocean” is a piece inspired by Stanislaw Lem’s “Solaris”. I was struck by the humans encounters with the living ocean on the planet, their fascination and draw into it, and their utlimate inability to rationalize and understand it. Their experiences often left them with more questions than answers, not only about the living ocean, but also themselves and the nature of their own existence.

For me, the story of “Solaris” holds many parallels to the experience of art that I search for when composing. Listening: drawn in, fascinated, the rational mind at rest, only an irrational experience is left. Afterwards: awe, questions about the work, questions for myself, curiosity.
