"White Funeral" For Orchestra. Selected for the 2nd annual BPYO Young Composers Initiative.

"White Funeral" symbolize the crucial moment of change in life - the burial of the old life. The piece is the process of the “white funeral” in the course over five minutes. The work begins with mysterious, dark atmosphere. The ideas then develop, keeping their properties while the environment surrounding them becomes more complicated. In the closing section, the ideas return in the low brass, fortissimo, surrounded by a very busy tutti orchestra in an almost triumphant way. At the very moment, we think that we have finally resurrected, exultantly.

Vangelis plays it on an acoustic piano with beautiful ambient room noise. I tried to replicate the feeling by boosting the pedal noise on my synth, and I added some pads that get pretty dark and intense towards the end.

The instrument is a Nord Stage 2, using a sampled Steinway grand piano and virtual analog synthesizers controlled with an expression pedal, and a generous amount of reverb.
