Steadfast in the studio working on the new album for Autumn 2017, here's another hint at what's been going on in the world of Nickodemus' latest creations & collaborations. "Mystic Molay" features Hassan Ben Jaafe, a Maâlem, or master Gnawa musician & his group Innov Gnawa. The song's lyrics reference & welcome the ancient Sufi mystic teacher Molay Abdelkader Jilani (Morrocan spelling) or Abd al-Qadir Gilani (Iraq/ Persian spelling). Recording the vocals & hajhuj (or gimbri), metal qarqaba (castanets) & the kouyos (chorus) & topping it all off with melodies on whirlitzer & violins, Nickodemus brings back that old school analog funk grooves known on his earlier albums collaborating with live musicians. In the spirit of club culture, Nickodemus solicited the remix talents of Aroop Roy who dropped a modern broken beat house version as well as Umoja's stripped down Cumbia meets Gnawa version for the dance-floor. Set to be released June 2 & the full album for October 2017.

Santiago was burning when I arrived at Nomad Festival in February. Just a few days earlier I had experienced the suffering on the streets rearing up in raw force.  So how could I, as an artist and exiled Chilean, not only exist with my worries and fears at a festival, but even make them a part of it?  By accepting, living and sharing the ambiguity of the two experiences.

I firmly believe that dance floors offer a shelter, not only to forget, but also to remember.  To allow pain.  To dance it out.  Because the times we live in challenge us to deal with the paralysing despair we are facing anywhere we look.  They challenge us to confront the fear-soaked conservatism that’s taking over our world.  They challenge us to keep fighting those who despise women, who fear same-sex love and who destroy our planet. 

Today more than ever, we need each other!  May we find the strength and love to fight the battles of our time, while always carrying peace in our hearts.
