Growing up the youngest of four in San Diego meant that Meow Mixx (real name Javier
Mendoza) had a mass of musical history to inform his perspective. A multi-genre patchwork
of sounds from 80’s to electro-rock to early aughts house were the sonic backdrop of his
childhood. He was lucky enough to be exposed to rave culture in the period before the EDM
explosion. This allowed him to experience a scene that still held its storied history of a
vibrant underground close to its heart. Going to his first massive in LA, solidified that dance
music was home.
As dance music converged even more with pop culture, Javier maintained a sharp focus on
the underground. He gravitated towards fresh and wonky sounds, always with a love for the
offensively dirty basslines that he experienced at his first festival. He’s united those
disparate influences into a sound that takes you straight into a dark room, full of sweaty
wiggling and grooving in time to frentic beats and rolling basslines.
He’s since relocated to Denver where he’s begun to amass an arsenal of soon to be
released sounds. Finding the balance between the overstated bass lines that made him fall
in love with dance music, and the thumping grooves of modern tech-house, he’s already
found favor in feedback sessions with the likes of veteran dance music powerhouse Dani
Deahl, and dubstep don Must Die. If this is any sign of things to come, the future isn’t just
bright for Meow Mixx, it’s ultraviolet.
