In this beautiful natural forest with abundant bird life, I made this sound recording at 7am. The tall trees create a beautiful reverb that adds to the three-dimensionality of the recording.

Homage to Janet Beat: Section 2: Inside the Bell Dome (Working Title)

Binaural recording of an extract from section 2 of my 16-channel acousmatic homage work honouring the pioneering music, practice and career of British electronic composer Janet Beat (b. 1937).

Originally composed for a 16-channel speaker layout consisting of two double rings of 8; see layout below.

This piece will be part of a series of electroacoustic compositions and sound installations paying homage to early women electronic composers, created as part of my PhD research at the University of Liverpool (UK).

Homage to Janet Beat: Section 2: Inside the Bell Dome [binaural recording wear headphones]

Exploring the water engineering relationship between Japan and the Netherlands across a trilogy of experimental releases, the third and final part of Field Records' Waterworks series is courtesy of Yui Onodera. Pairing delicate synthesis and instrumentation with field recordings and negative space, the accomplished artist and sound architect examines the impact of water engineering on Japan's Kiso Three Rivers. 
 
The location refers to the confluence of the Kiso, Nagara and Ibi rivers on the Nōbi plain in Gifu prefecture. In the late 19th century, Japanese authorities collaborated with Dutch engineer Johannes de Rijke to separate the three rivers at the lower part of the Kiso delta. These extensive improvements, which were finalized in 1912, successfully shielded the city of Nagoya from regular flooding.
 
Onodera's minimalist palette and detailed approach to spatial sound design balances microscopic field recordings and tonally-rich traditional instruments, which he applies with stark focus to the subject of the Kiso Three Rivers across eight extended pieces of music arranged into two distinct parts. The A side's shorter tracks are delicately sculpted miniatures interweaving chiming bell tones, treated guitar impressions and hushed pads. The B side's two longer suites are more overtly minimal in nature, emphasising sampled water sources accented with patient brush strokes of synthesis.

During a visit to Willsbridge Mill in 2018, I captured two distinct field recordings using my Sony PCM-M10 recorder. The first recording focused on the water flowing through Siston Brook. The sound of the gentle current, combined with the subtle trickle of smaller streams and the occasional splash against stones, created a calming and immersive natural soundscape.

The second recording embraced the general ambience surrounding the mill. Here, birdcalls formed a peaceful backdrop, intermittently punctuated by the casual voices of other visitors passing through, and sounds from the cafe. This blend of natural and human sounds offers a realistic sense of place, reflecting the mill’s role as both a serene environment and a popular local spot.

From Perihelion to Aphelion is a miniature stereo acousmatic etude, which explores the concept of space, both sonically and theoretically. This work takes the listener through a sonic space journey, where the listener experiences sounds produced by three different planet's atmospheres in our solar system; Uranus, Earth and Saturn. Each of the planets atmospheres forms their own section, which represents a different destination on the musical space journey.

From Perihelion to Aphelion begins with the high pitch gestural harmonic atmosphere of Uranus. Before traveling to the windy atmospheric atmosphere of Earth, which reveals small glimpses of the familiar, through field recordings of Earth’s environmental sounds including birds and traffic. The work concludes with atmospheric bass noises that develop the character of Saturn.

The initial concept of creating a space journey was inspired by a number of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) sound recordings, as each recording has their own personal history, story, voice, life and energy. In particular NASA Voyager Space Sounds CD (2009) was an important influential tool, as each track provided a true insight into the sounds heard in space, which NASA recorded on their space voyages. In particular three tracks were significant to From Perihelion to Aphelion, including Rings of Uranus, Voice of Earth and Saturn's Rings, as they shone light on the different planets atmospheric characters.
