Social Criticism in Lauryn Hill's 'Doo Wop (That Thing)'
Lauryn Hill's song 'Doo Wop (That Thing)' is an empowerment anthem and a sharp social critique, released in 1998 as part of her acclaimed album 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill'. The song addresses themes of self-respect, sexuality and the dangers of being carried away by appearances and materialism.
In the first verse, Hill speaks directly to women, warning them about the dangers of allowing themselves to be used by men who are only interested in 'that thing'. She criticizes the idea that women must conform to standards of beauty and behavior in order to be accepted or loved, mentioning 'hair weaves like Europeans' and 'fake nails done by Koreans' as examples of how women are pressured to conform to external standards. The artist also references religious and historical figures, such as Jezebel, to illustrate the consequences of straying from one's own principles and values.
The second verse is directed at men, criticizing those who prioritize material possessions and status over their responsibilities and relationships. Hill calls out toxic behaviors such as domestic violence and irresponsible fatherhood, and questions how these men can hope to succeed in life if they are not right on the inside. The song ends with a dialogue that reflects on the difference between love and being in love, suggesting that true love goes beyond the surface and accepts a person as they are. 'Doo Wop (That Thing)' is a powerful reminder that self-respect and integrity are key, and that we should be aware of the pitfalls of materialism and objectification in interpersonal relationships.

On 24-25th March 2016, the The University of Edinburgh hosted an academic seminar celebrating 30 years of Pet Shop Boys. Called Pet Shop Boys Symposium, this event was a unique and compelling stroll through history of the most successful UK pop duo of all time.

I was contacted by the organisers of the Symposium to DJ an exclusive 3 hour Pet Shop Boys set to close out the event. The set, called “Encomium: 1986 - 2016” included classic remixes and tracks from the entire Pet Shop Boys discography, from "Please" (1986) through "Super" (2016). To commemorate the experience, as well as celebrate the 30th anniversary of “Please” and the release of “Super”, I’m releasing the mix as a stream on Soundcloud, Mixcloud, and the Remarkable Podcast. If you were there, you can now relive the night…and if you weren’t, you can reflect upon the Pet Shop Boys’ extraordinary career and contributions to electronic pop and dance music by enjoying this extensive mix through their astonishing history and impressive catalog.
