There’s a chapter in my novel, The Beautiful World of the Alive, called The Waste Land, where the protagonists grapple with existential fears after witnessing their Cold War nightmares come to life in the made-for-TV movie The Day After. Of course, I based that chapter on my own experiences as a fourteen-year-old in 1983. But I also drew upon the experiences of another—my girlfriend—who, in 1992, after a night of watching TV with me and after something came on making reference to the fall of the Soviet Union, began a long conversation that went until sunrise.

This DJ set reflects the sound coming from long lonesome roads stretching out into the horizon at night.

It's the sound of having moved away from all the ghosts that roamed the streets in dreams of my past life in New York City, before heart break, before illness and failure forced me to move away far away.

It's the sound of driving over countless desolate roads, winding through ghost towns and vast empty space, in the blue hour before sunrise and at the golden hour before sunset.

It's the sound playing in my head on those long drives where all I did was think and tried coming to terms with all that came about between, December 28, 2010, when I wrote Desert Road of Night, and now, September 6, 2016.

How I almost lost my life.

Since then, that desert road of night ended in Texas and my arriving at a place of peace with myself.

No more ghosts hovering on the side of roads in my dreams; no more dreams.

No more fear.
If I were to die tomorrow I'd die with no regrets which has been my goal all along.

The sound at the end of this DJ set reflects a moment in my life where I didn't think that was possible.

V. E. Marés is an author, photographer, and electronic musician from Brooklyn, NY, now based in Austin, TX.

Marés has read his poetry at open-mic readings in Manhattan's Lower East Side and East Village and has published his work in small literary journals. Through his boudoir photography studio, Marés has helped women facing personal challenges see themselves as more than their physical illness, trauma, or bad relationships. Marés has also produced dance music podcasts and worked as a deep house music DJ in New York City.

Currently, he spends his time writing and photographing stars in the vast night skies of the American Southwest.
