I've chosen to read this Harlem Renaissance poem because it explains the dilemma that every person of mixed race must have had at that time. It tells us about how confused those people must have felt, how unaccepted and out of place. This poem is telling us: imagine if society were the one to tell you which parent to respect more, which one is worth more, when they are both the same to you, and you yourself are a mix of both. Where does that put you? In a heartbreaking situation. In a situation where you have no way of finding yourself. This was a hard thing to face at the time, and a lot of people were like that.
