Greetings, Earthlings!

Summer is here and Tokyo is H-O-T!  I've been living here for a little while, but the summers seem to surprise me every year.  If the screeching cicadas aren't enough of a warning to stay indoors, insta-melt when you step outside sure is.  I feel bad for the salary-men who have to wear suits to work everyday!

This latest drop in my Interstellar Sessions series is an all-vinyl mix.  I was recently hanging out with my good friend (and, in my opinion, one of the top-3 house/techno DJ's in Tokyo), Groovepatrol, and our conversation inspired me to throw down some wax.  Recently, I've been toying with the latest, digital Pioneer CDJ decks and have been loving the tight looping and speed of workflow.  But, what Groovepatrol reminded me of is that, with digital coming to the forefront of the DJ world, there is a certain "perfection" which also comes with it.  The human-element of DJ'ing is being lost to tools which can auto-beatmatch, lock mixes, loop perfectly until infinity, etc.  DJ'ing is about the moment, the spontaneity, even if it means mixes aren't 100% tight for the entire duration.

After recording this latest mix, I've felt a resurgence of that spontaneous feeling... maybe not completely, but I feel it.  Maybe it was using vinyl, maybe it was the feelings and nostalgia from some of the older records... but something did come back.

Interstellar Sessions Vol.6 (All-vinyl Mix)

Using an Elektron Octatrack as a mixing, effect and resampling unit, paired with two Amiga 600 computers with only 2MB of RAM running PT-1210, a DJ software I develop with some friends, I bring you one hour of 90s acid tunes that still slap today.

PT-1210 uses the Protracker module format, which is an open source music file that contains all the samples as well as the song data in one package. It's 100% open: anyone can download, peep inside and if they wish so, re-edit the tunes. Pretty revolutionary for being like 30 years ago.
The filesizes are tiny too, remember these computers have very limited RAM, and all the tune must fit there. The result is played in real time and thanks to our software, can be modified live with performance features like looping and muting of parts.

All but one of these tunes were made back in the 90s too! The sole 2021 tune is a remix I made of a track by my friend Phineus II.

The Amiga computer is a pillar of 90s music production, without it, a lot of the acid, rave and jungle records that were most influential in the rave scene of the 90s would not have existed. Like other people who didn't have enough resources to buy other equipment, I also used it to take my first steps in music making.

Offering sampling capabilities at a mere fraction of the price of even the cheapest sampler at the time, and being pretty similar in sound and spirit to the Ensoniq Mirage (both engineered by the same person), the Amiga was a very tempting platform to get started in electronic music creation. Its 8-bit resolution can be a huge asset in the right hands as the tunes played in this mix prove. Also who doesn't like some low bit crunch?

It has been famously used by artists like Urban Shakedown, Patric Catani, Axwell, Plaid, Equinox, Paradox, Bizzy B, Omni Trio, Ural 13 Diktators and many more, and currently has been revived by a new wave of jungle producers like of Boy 8-Bit, Kid Lib, Phineus II, Dev/Null and others.

For our 905th RA Podcast, we're proud to welcome Goldie, one of the most famous, talented and important electronic music artists of all time. Starting out as a graffiti artist, he eventually made music under the name Rufige Kru, helping push the then-nascent genre of jungle forward with tracks like "Krisp Biscuit (Power)" and "Terminator." The latter was released under the name Metalheads, which would later become the name of his label (with a z instead of an s). Metalheadz—which he cofounded with DJ Storm and the late Kemistry—celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and remains the defining outlet of drum & bass, the genre that grew out of jungle that Goldie helped invent with records like 1995's massive crossover album Timeless (alongside countless other classics). He's a producer, DJ, actor and all-around celebrity, a huge personality in UK electronic music.

Goldie is also RA's guest curator this month, and his tenure starts with this mix. We'll have more to come starting this week—check our editor's letter later today for more information—but for now, here's a survey of drum & bass past and present from a man who helped invent the genre. With plenty of new Metalheadz material plus a healthy dose of older tracks, these two hours lay out the history of Metalheadz, drum & bass and its various subgenres, from twinkling liquid to rumbling techstep. It's the first part of a month celebrating Goldie's legacy, and we can't wait to show you the rest.

this is the 21st chapter in a series of mixes called 'trust me i was there' - these are the tracks that were big in the clubs and on the radio stations i played on and listened to - there are some bangers in here.
in 1992 i was on impact (or it might have been format by then) with my dj partner Swift - we did every sat and sunday 4 hours both nights, then hung out in the studio in case a cover show came up. i think eager is the word :D
