Apparat - Useless Information

Here's Alex's and my oral history of this track..

Alex:  "The idea for ‘Eve’ came about from a short session in my studio where I sketched out some very rough 16 bar loops and sent them over to Max to play with, deliberately stopping myself from developing them too far at this stage in order to leave space the collaborative process to evolve."

Max:  "I almost un-wrote a track for this one. Alex started off with the main bulk of the ideas for the track, and I initially chopped it all back to a couple of key elements.   I then experimented with some FFT effects and building some chaotic randomising manipulations of the basic elements, and sliding drum rhythms so that one drum element would slip relative to another and then back in - all an attempt to generate some movement and variation from the simple building blocks."

Alex:   "It was interesting to hear the rough ideas I had created, developed in a totally different way to how they would have had I been writing the track by myself. Inspired by the new direction the track was going in - "

Max:  "I'd made a mess.  Alex helped tidy it all up and bring it enough back into line to work as a dancefloor track"

Alex:  "- I layered some more percussion hits and string textures.  We continued the process of sending stems back and forth, refining each others ideas as well and creating new ones until the track was ready."

Max:  "The quotient series has been a nice opportunity to experiment with new music outside of the restrictions of record labels and their need to sell product.  This freedom has left me open to put out a piano solo and feedback matrix, a 10 minute ambient to drum and bass glitch remix, a track scored to a video, a one off club collab and more - all projects that I wanted to try, and am glad I did, but that wouldn't easily fit into the usual EP/LP formats. 

It's been a sort of sketch and experiment project, much of it tied to the Emergence visual shows, where I've been experimenting with how I can perform music and visual in sync in a live format. "

Rival Consoles has shared a second single, 'Vibrations on a String', taken from his forthcoming new album 'Articulation', released on 31 July. 

"Vibrations on a String was one of the earliest pieces I made for the record. The title is a direct reference to the behaviour of the main synth: I was trying to mimic playing a guitar string both softly and aggressively. I think a part of me is often trying to mimic the physical world with synths. There is something mindful about observing things and making sense of them, and once you try to recreate something in a different medium it feels like there are new opportunities to explore." — Ryan Lee West

'Articulation', which follows 2018’s 'Persona', was conceived with a very visual way of thinking, unusual for the London musician and producer. During the writing process Ryan drew structures, shapes and patterns by hand to try and find new ways of thinking about music, giving himself a way to problem-solve away from the computer. The album title references a piece by the avant-garde contemporary composer Györgi Ligeti, though not for its music, but for the non-traditional graphic score that accompanied it.

Since the release of 2018's 'Persona', Ryan contributed an exclusive track 'Them Is Us' to Adult Swim’s coveted Singles series and shared the beautifully textured solo piano piece 'Winter’s Lament' on this year’s Piano Day. He has also been in high demand as a composer, scoring Charlie Brooker’s much talked about Black Mirror episode Striking Vipers, composing original music for Secret Cinema presents Stranger Things as well as renowned choreographer Alexander’s Whitley’s groundbreaking new work 'Overflow', which was set to premiere at London’s Sadler’s Wells Theatre this spring.

Ten Walls debut album 'Queen'

The long awaited debut album from the highly talented dance music producer and artist Ten Walls called 'Queen' available from the mid of March in a double CD package and in the end of the month also in digital format. The author created a continuous story full of different colours and a great mixture of different genres including flavours of Broken Beat, Dub or even New Jazz. 
 'Queen' is an organic album. CD1 is more for listening, slow and light, including few songs as well. CD2 sounds more like dance music. One can also hear a lot of genres there, moving from one to the other. This album as one piece, just divided into two physical CD's. 
 The package of the album looks like a book - a piece of art. The book includes photos, reflecting each track. 'I have pictured these musical pieces in my mind, as it's natural for the artist to exceed the competence and search for additional forms that would supplement your work, making it single piece of art.' - adds Marijus (Ten Walls).  The combination of arts is a very important thing to be noticed, each of them has it's space, place and role in the album. Poetry and lyrics, photography / visual arts and music, altogether they make 'Queen' more that just a music album. 
 Ten Walls also made collaborations with very wide and different spectrum of musicians during the creation of his debut album 'Queen'. Conductor Ricardas Sumila, legendary piano genius and artist Petras Geniusas, good old friend Vytautas Sondeckis added some Cello masterpiece, bass guitar Domas Aleksa, drummer Marijus Aleksa, singers Monika Liu, ALX and Jonatan Backelie, Marijus' spiritual friend and teacher Andrew and nonet performers.
 Ten Walls debut album 'Queen' is available in double CD package from the mid of March and in digital format from the 27th of March.
