King Aelle of Northumbria, according to some historical accounts, was responsible for the death of Viking hero Ragnar Lothbrok. Aelle had him thrown into a pit full of venomous snakes. "How the little pigs would grunt," Ragnar is reported to have said, "if they knew how the old boar suffers!" The "little pigs," Ragnar's term of endearment for his sons, did more than grunt. Word of their father's death galvanized them into action. Experience Aelles last hours before facing his final, justful judgement.

All sources agree that Ragnar died in England, although the legends of the cause of his death vary. In one story, he is killed by the Northumbrian King Ælla when he is thrown into a pit os venemous snakes. In another, he is murdered in East Anglia after befriending Kind Edmund. Although the date is sometimes given as 840, that seems unlikely as the Viking invasion of England by Ragnar's sons takes place in 865.

Although the historicity of Ragnar has been challenged and debated, it is important to note that he is mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. The Chronicle was first compiled around 890 AD and is widely considered to be a relatively accurate telling of Anglo-Saxon history. As this would only be some 50 years previously, it would seem we can rest certain that there was a much feared Viking Chieftain by that name. With that said,, it does appear that certain stories have been attached to Ragnar which are actually about other Viking leaders.

Whatever the case, we do know that the "Great Heathen Army" led by three sons of Ragnar's landed in 865 and commenced a 14 year long war against the small Saxon Kingdoms (Heptarchy) of 9th Century England. It is possible that the invasion may have had to do with avenging the murder of Ragnar. An alternative and probably better theory holds that the invasion was to retake lands previously claimed by Ragnar. As was common Viking practice, the invaders were more than willing to be paid off to attack some other group. The story is told that the King of East Anglia gave the Vikings horses in return for their agreement to attack other kingdoms.

Ragnar Lothbrok To Valhalla

Bjorn Ironside, Ragnar Lothbrok’s son, was one of the kings of Sweden who lived in the 9th century and who is assumed to be one of the founders and the first ruler of the protohistoric Swedish dynasty named the Munsö Dynasty.
Bjorn was one of the sons of Ragnar Lothbrok and Princess Aslaug. Also, as another conflict with the TV series, Bjorn was not their eldest son. It was Ivar the Boneless and Bjorn was the second eldest son.
As a fearless warrior and fierce ruler as his father, Björn Ironside raided and pillaged many places including France, Spain, Italy, England, Wales, cities in Mediterranean Sea like Sicily and coasts of North Africa.
Bjorn Ironside founded the House of Münso in Sweden, which is known as the Old Dynasty and which ruled Sweden for many generations until one day they were thrown out of Sweden after a long period of civil war through the end of the 10th century.

The Münso Dynasty became the ruler house of Denmark in time. The name Münso was derived from the island where there is a hill claimed to be Bjorn Ironside’s grave.

Bjorn Ironside Son of Ragnar Lothbrok

Erik the Red is remembered in medieval and Icelandic sagas as having founded the first continuous settlement in Greenland.
Erik’s voyage began in the spring of 982. He and his ships left from Sneefellsjokull (spelled Snaefellsjokull in Icelandic) and traveled about 180 miles. In the summer of 983, he landed on the westcoast of a new country. When Gunnbiorn saw the new land back in 877 CE, he called it Cronland. Erik named it Grϋnland, or Greenland in English, because of the green meadows he found. He also believed the name was more inviting and that people would want to go there.4 He spent the winter on the east coast in a place he named Eriksey (also spelled Eiriksey) which translates to “Erik’s Island.” In the spring, he moved further inland and headed to a neighboring fjord, or inlet, that he named Eriksfjord which means “Erik’s Fjord.” During the summer, Erik and his men explored uninhabited lands to the west and named many different areas, most of them starting with “Erik.”

Erik and his explorers found that this new land had a similar climate to Iceland. Fjords froze over in winter, but contained rich vegetation during the warmer summers. He spent the winter of 983 CE – 984 CE on the southern tip of Greenland. When spring returned, he did further exploration until he once again returned to Eriksey for winter. He did this during his three years of exile until his banishment was over. When his exile was ended, he sailed back around Cape Farewell to return to Iceland which he reached in the summer of 985 CE. In total, Erik the Red had sailed over six thousand miles in only four sailing seasons, making it one of the greatest maritime feats achieved during the medieval period.

Having settled many colonies in Greenland, Erik the Red had planned one other voyage of exploration. Greenland lacked an important resource for the settlers – wood. One of the ships that left Iceland a few months after Erik’s main fleet arrived in Greenland a few months late. They had initially sailed too far south. When the ship finally made it to Greenland, their captain told Erik about a land he saw that was filled with wood. Erik discussed plans to visit this land with his oldest son Leif. Shortly before getting ready to leave, Erik’s horse stumbled badly. He took this as an omen that he should remain home, and Leif went on to make the journey without his father. Although the date and cause of death of Erik the Red are unknown, it is believed that it is after Leif’s return to Greenland with news of his voyage.

(Viking Saga Part 2)

A shieldmaiden could be young or old, married or single, muscular or willowy. It was not unheard of for a shieldmaiden to leave her home to fight for a cause or go raiding, only to return and reengage with domesticity, get married, and/or have children. Some shieldmaidens were warriors for life, while others died young or sought more quiet lives after adventure. Shieldmaidens would have used all the weaponry available to male warriors at the time, and there are accounts of women going viking and fighting in shield walls with their male warrior compatriots.

The most famous Shieldmaiden today is Lagerther.
Lagertha's tale is recorded in passages in the ninth book of the Gesta Danorum, a twelfth-century work of Danish history by the Christian historian Saxo Grammaticus.

Lagertha's career as a warrior began when Frø, king of Sweden, invaded Norway and killed the Norwegian king Siward. Frø put the women of the dead king's family into a brothel for public humiliation. Hearing of this, Ragnar Lodbrok came with an army to avenge his grandfather Siward. Many of the women Frø had ordered abused dressed themselves in men's clothing and fought on Ragnar's side. Chief among them, and key to Ragnar's victory.

Ladgerda, a skilled Amazon, who, though a maiden, had the courage of a man, and fought in front among the bravest with her hair loose over her shoulders. All marvelled at her matchless deeds, for her locks flying down her back betrayed that she was a woman.

Impressed with her courage, Ragnar courted her from afar. Lagertha feigned interest and Ragnar arrived to seek her hand, bidding his companions wait in the Gaular valley. He was set upon by a bear and a great hound which Lagertha had guarding her home, but killed the bear with his spear and choked the hound to death. Thus he won the hand of Lagertha. According to Saxo, Ragnar had a son with her, Fridleif, as well as two daughters, whose names are not recorded.

Shieldmaiden

Ubba was born to the legendary Viking, Ragnar Lothbrok, and possibly Aslaug Sigurdsdottir. Ubba’s father, Ragnar Lothbrok was shipwrecked off the Northumbrian coast. King Aelle immediately marched, defeated the Viking army and took Ragnar prisoner.

Ubba’s father, Ragnar Lothbrok, was killed by King Aelle of Northumbria. Legend states that he was thrown into a pit of vipers.

Ubba was one of the leaders of the huge Viking force known by the Saxons as The Great Heathen Army. His brother Ivar the Boneless was the overall leader and his brothers Halfdan and Sigurd Snake-in-the-Eye were also present. They landed in East Anglia and their purpose was to avenge the death of their father, Ragnar Lothbrok.
